21 KMT committee members resign over election bribery speculation

Quote:
Taipei, Oct. 23 (CNA) Twenty-one members of the ruling Kuomintang's Central Standing Committee (CSC) had offered to resign as of Friday night amid criticism that the election for seats on the party's decision-making body was marred by rampant bribery.

"Given this large number of resignations, our Central Standing Committee is scheduled to hold an extraordinary meeting next Monday to discuss how to tackle the issue, " KMT spokesman Lee Chien-jung said at an evening news conference.

"A by-election may have to be held if so many seats are really vacated," Lee added.

According to the KMT charter, the CSC has 39 members, with 32 elected by the party's Central Committee members and seven designated by the party's chairman.

The decision-making committee would have difficulty meeting the minimum number of members needed to convene a meeting as stipulated in the country's Civic Organizations Law, after the resignation of the 21 CSC members takes effect.

Two other CSC members had already been stripped of their seats after probes showed they had showered Central Committee members with gifts in exchange for their votes in the Oct. 17 election.

The mass resignation was inspired by outspoken Legislator Chiu Yi, who offered on a political talk show Thursday night to give up his CSC seat to express his displeasure over what he called the bad precedent set by the just-concluded CSC election, in which many hopefuls were accused of hosting feasts or presenting gifts to solicit votes.

President Ma Ying-jeou, who doubles as KMT chairman, was quoted as having said Friday afternoon that he would be pleased to see CSC members follow suit in order to rebuild the CSC's reputation and authority.

After Ma's words were spread by the party's spokesman, many CSC members offered to relinquish their seats to signify their integrity and defend the party's reputation.
