I have a macbook and I don't use an antivirus when I'm using OSX.

On my windows 7 partition I have avast. I remember seeing about it somewhere saying its a pretty good antivirus. I wouldn't really know though. I'm going to give the microsoft security essentials a try though. It seems pretty good from what everyone is saying about it.

I just use one til I get a virus then I switch... way back I used to use Mcafee... got a virus then I switched to Symantec Corporate edition. Then I got a virus and I'm now on NOD32. When I get a virus I plan to move to the MS Security Essentials.

I'm using Avira (the free version). You can set a local security policy to stop the pop up if it annoys you.

The latest Symantec is supposed to be pretty lightweight now and some fairly good detection rates too.

If you're looking for some independent comparisons of AV products, check out AV Comparatives. They do regular reviews of the popular AV products and give information on the speed, detection rate and false positives of many of the top AV products out there.

I like to consider myself fairly computer savvy but I don't think I'd EVER run without an AV product. That's just asking for trouble. Besides...if you don't run an antivirus, how do you truly know you don't have a virus?

do you at least have a firewall on? u seem to know what you're doing but with the antivirus/spam on i feel more free to click on more adventurous links and files, like going on one of those file hosting sites and have the AV block things repeatedly

Norton has always proved to be a resource hog, slowing down the machine in most cases

AVG doesn't do comprehensive scans from my experience, but you honestly can't expect that much when it's free and they have a paid version of it

Eset NOD32 has proven to be the best for me so far

Can anyone recommend me one that "turns-off" while gaming and "turns-on" when i'm not gaming?

Kaspersky has a Gaming Profile option (it's disabled by default, but you can enable it in the settings) ...

I use Avira, it was rated the best free Antivirus, AVG doesn't work good. I had virus that AVG didn't pick up at all but it was instant when I switch to Avira. You just have to put up with those update ads once a week...

You know you can disable that with a local security policy, right?
