Jury Awards $16 Million for Death from Water Drinking Contest

Quote:

On January 12, 2007, 28-year-old Jennifer Strange participated in a radio contest called “Hold Your Wee for a Wii” by Entercom Sacramento radio station KDND 107.9 that awarded the person that could drink the most water without going to the bathroom a Nintendo Wii video game system. After drinking nearly 2 gallons of water at the contest, Jennifer Strange died later that day of water intoxication.

The Sacramento Press is reporting that Jennifer’s family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Entercom Sacramento and its parent company for the actions of its employees. After nine days of deliberation, the jurors reportedly found Entercom Sacramento LLC negligent in Jennifer’s death based on reports that the radio station’s on-air employees did not heed warnings by listeners that called in to discuss how dangerous this contest was to one’s health. The jury did not find Entercom Sacramento’s parent company negligent in this case as it was reported that employees at the radio station did not consult the parent company’s legal department prior to sponsoring the water drinking contest. Jennifer Strange’s family was awarded just over $16 million in damages.

ShanghaiKid 10-30-2009 08:17 PM

how fucking stupid do you have to be to hold a water drinking contest. its practically a certainty someones dumb enough to drink so much that they drown themselves (which is what water intoxication is).

124Y 10-30-2009 08:18 PM

Pwned by water.

spoon.ek9 10-30-2009 08:24 PM

the radio station was even more retarded for disregarding the warnings they received from concerned listeners.

Just as stupid as the girl who died from a ketamine snorting contest. This is really more like, what's with all the stupid promo contests lately? Do they have 20 year olds manage these companies?

umm i'm pretty sure water intoxication is not "drowning" yourself in the absolute terms of drowning...
you're body conducts impulses through the body through synapse (bio 12). Which means your body is charged and needs a medium to pass impulses through.
ie. your brain needs to send impulses to your body; heart, limbs, organs, etc.

If too much water is consumed the concentration of sodium is lowered relative to the amount of water. ie. diluted. Thus, there isn't a medium for impulses to travel and if no impulses can be sent then the body cannot function..
heart stops, brain doesn't function, etc.

human lives are worth somewhere between 1 - 2 million actually. the extra 14-15 million in there is because the death was due to negligence i guess.
