new HD and found 116mb missing?

how do I see what's in that 116mb?

the box says it comes with Norton Securities and some other crap, but I don't see anything at all. I have unclicked/unhidden everything in the folder option.

btw I have to show off this external 2.5" HD is fucking awesome looking and compact. $95only

every single drive is like this. no drive will ever have every byte of space that is listed on the box. if you are really hurting for that extra 116MB get a bigger drive.

You would have more space in your system overall if you would just uninstall windows XP because windows 7 is has that XP visualization thingy-ma-jig.

yeah but 116/465 does not = 0%

something funny is still going on, but it doesn't really affect how much room there actually is supposed to be.

Formatting always takes up some space. unformatted it will be 500 gigs but once it's formatted you lose some space.

I never find a good answer on RS.

Apparently, I know there should be 465gb (GB size x 0.935)
used space should be Zero rather than that odd 116mb.

I am just afraid it could be some hidden software installed in it

uhm hd are never empty from the get to, there's always "missing or "used" up data already.

Does it really matter? 116MB is nothing.

yes, I know...but you never know what's hidden in that 116mb.
if it's those pre-installed security software, I wouldn't touch that.
or if it's spyware, I would definitely want to get rid of it.

nevermind, it is now being formatted.

It's probably "system files" pre-allocated for something like System Restore or the Recycle Bin, which means Windows will recreate it as soon as the format is done. When you were unchecking "hidden files" and such, did you also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files"?

Try opening a command prompt, going to that drive, and doing a "dir /a /s" to show all files and subfolders.

is this thing just an external drive or was it advertised as a "backup drive"?

You're using FAT32. That file system will format the HDD in a way where you will not get the full capacity as advertised and reserve some space for system use if you use the Windows GUI to format. I believe you will not get the 116MB space usage if you formatted in true DOS or format using a utility outside of Windows altogether.

However, you could also use exFat that is introduced in Windows7 to get the full space.
