Just curious, is it like the standard garbage cans that Vancouver has been using for a couple years now?

Jsunu 11-03-2009 12:18 PM

Oh wow you guys get city garbage cans?!

Graeme S 11-03-2009 12:19 PM

I think so and yes, in that order.

That's awesome, we should adopt this in Richmond. All I see is shitty garbage cans that fall off to the side or that are too big for pickup :S.

!SG 11-03-2009 12:23 PM

we've had them for a couple years now, and u had to order them. if u take the standard small dinky garbage can they offer, or u take on a one time fee to get a larger one.

the standard small dinky garbage can they provided was smaller by volume than a standard garbage can you purchase at home depot.

Is it a mandatory thing or can you still use your own? fuck why I am so facinated by standardized garabage cans, its a slow day...... :(

underscore 11-03-2009 12:26 PM

Kelowna got standard cans too, but they forgot our road for a few months :(

Nope, its mandatory. Garbage collectors wont pick up your garbage unless its the City of Vancouver garbage can. We also got one for our yard trimmings too. ;)

There are different sizes for these garbage can/yard trimming can, you pay for what you need on your property tax (I think). Bigger can = cost more.

It's mandatory as the garbage and yard twimmings carts are automated. Basically the truck drives by and this big mechanical arm grabs the cart lifts it up and dumps it in the truck then they leave. Which means faster because they don't need to get out and less injuries.

and those trucks are right hand drive! pretty neat actually.

Everybody gets a standard size can. From there, you can opt for larger sizes. Two sizes available - the largest costing the most. You get charged the extra on your taxes.

Yard waste, however, is just one size for everybody.

I can't wait for it to happen. I've had it for a while now (registered and marked). You can see the various sizes at the Still Creek recycling depot and take it from there. The Still Creek depot also gives out recycling boxes (the blue kind) for free.

Edit: and those plastic bags (blue and yellow).

I dun get these automated garbage collecting trucks. What if some stupid person put their garbage can backwards, or sideways, the driver still have to get out & align them with the truck

Gh0stRider 11-03-2009 01:31 PM

i hope nobody steals it.

If you think about it, the truck grabs the garbage can, and turns it upside down. It doesnt really matter which way the garbage can is oriented because once it is upside down the contents will just dump out anyways. Maybe those arms on the truck are designed to be able to pick up those garbage cans whichever way the cans are positioned.

Actually no it does. Trust me I take calls all the time for missed pick up. Go look at your automated cart and look at the back where you see that metal bar. That's the section there where the arm connects to so if you have it sideways or backwards it doesn't work which results in your garbage being missed unless the driver is nice. Not sure about Burnaby but that's how the Vancouver ones work.

!SG 11-03-2009 02:22 PM

manditory,

the garbage man can now sit in his truck, and this arm comes out and picks up the can automatically.

Oh. really. I guess the arms are designed to fit only one way then.

This also answers q0192837465's question too. Garbage truck drivers skip your house if you don't position it front facing the alley. ;)

Graeme S 11-03-2009 03:02 PM

Iirc it's to reduce wcb claims, not necessarily save labour $; maybe they'll just have someone aligning them properly.

Not only does it need to be positioned rite but you must leave 3 ft of space around it.
