How do I block my IP so Telus doesn't know what i'm downloading?
 

i got this email the other day...

"We are writing to inform you that TELUS has received a complaint that alleges that your TELUS Internet Service account has been involved in copyright infringement. This complaint was traced back to your account based on the IP address used at the time of this activity.

Please note that TELUS has not provided any of your personal account information to the complainant. It is TELUS' policy to disclose such information to a complainant only if ordered to do so by a court of law, which has not happened to date.

We do, however, want you to be aware that this complaint was received by us and offer you the following information that may be of help to you:

If you are unaware of this type of activity originating from your account, you may wish to inquire with others who have access to your account.

If you are using a dial-up account, change the account password to ensure that only authorized users have access to it.

You may also want to check your system for viruses, which may explain why this sort of activity is originating from your account.

If the ADSL modem is connected to a wireless router, please make sure that only your authorized computers can connect to it and access the internet. For help in securing the wireless router, please contact the router vendor."

I use Vuze to download movies. is there a way i can block my IP when i use Vuze? So I don't get "caught".

i dont think u can block ur ip, cause it's telus that gives u the ip.
r u getting this because ur torrenting too much? if so, have u try encryption on the bt program? if its from something other than torrents then i donno.

u must be downloading like crazy cause i dl all the time and telus sends me nothing

The obvious answer to this question would be to stop downloading immediately.
Not that you'll take my advice to heart but copyright infringement is serious business!

Perhaps try Peer Guardian? It doesn't block your IP but it will block known IP's that could be tracking people.

My understanding is that, in Canada at least, DOWNLOADING isn't illegal, but SHARING is. Thing with almost all torrent clients is, as you're downloading, the same data is made available for others to download from you, so unless you block the upstream, you're automatically sharing everything you download. Vuze is a search browser, torrent client, and media player all in one... so as you're viewing/downloading video on it, you're also streaming it back out to others.

What's happening here is that copyright holders (the movie/TV studios, rights organizations, etc.) will go out and search torrents of their properties, then attempt to download them... make note of the IP they're coming from, and then contact that ISP, saying, "Hey, we're downloading our stuff from this IP of yours, make them stop!"

You have no idea how many people I've explained the above to. People seem to think downloading is the issue all the time, when it's really their uploads - i.e. distributing copyrighted materials without the owner's consent.

Honestly, too many people use BT. Hop onto usenet, and you never have to share again. No stupid elitist BT sites requiring invites, no stupid ratios - just download.

That's because it's EASY (especially with things like Vuze). Same reason Napster got so popular so fast back in the day: it wasn't so much because the music was free, but because it was dead easy for ANYONE. Type in a song or artist name, hit Search, click Download... bing, bang, boom. Also a big part of the reason iTunes is the #1 paid download source: Apple spent a lot of time making it EASY, especially in its integration with the iPod.

When everyone else was using Napster, I was using IRC with filebots. Go into a sharing channel, message the bots with search commands, then with download commands. Easy, IF you even knew what IRC was. Music, video, applications... all there.

Also sites like Rapidshare, $$$$$$$$$$, Hotfile and so on are fast and not really that expensive.
If you arent downloading that much just download a program called jdownloader and find sites that upload to multiple servers. You should be able to get away with just using the free services then.

Yeah, you can't hide your IP. They will sniff you out one way or another.

Either somehow get into a private torrent site, or get on usenet or even oldschool IRC. Public torrents makes it all easy for us to download stuff. But it's just as easy for the corporates to sniff you out.

if you're using Utorr enable encryption and that will solve the problem

yea that email is not from telus, they just forward it to you from whatever company sent it to them. Use peer guardian 2 and force encryption in utorrent.

1) Downloading is legal in Canada, uploading is illegal. That said, please seed.

2) Use uTorrent, go into the options, enable encryption and you should be fine

3) Telus will only e-mail you if someone got mad, tracked your IP, found it was with Telus, and e-mailed Telus. My friend got an e-mail from them because a few pieces of a new Nintendo DS game from Disney came through when he was getting SNES games. Disney was not happy and e-mails were sent.

MIRC is the shit, thats where I get all my music from. Yeah use utorrent and encrypt, you'll be good :thumbsup:

I always leave encryption disabled. It's supposed to bypass QoS if left enabled.

I don't think encryption works in this case. What I believe encryption does is that it bypasses any type of torrent blocking that ISP's do (e.g., completely block out the torrent or slow it down). With torrents, you can never mask your IP, unless you use proxies but those are never really 100%. The reason your e-mail is that someone reported you (e.g., RIAA / MPAA). That is someone from the RIAA/MPAA also were connected in the swarm that you were downloading from, and just gathered all the e-mails that they were being downloaded from and sent the ISP the e-mail.

Someone mentioned Peer Guardian, that may work since it will block out known piracy agency IP's from connecting to your swarm. Another sure way is sign up for Private Torrent sites since they tend to ignore these sites as compared to the large public torrent sites (piratebay, mininova, etc...). Or you can sign for for Shaw haha, during my years I have never been given an e-mail nor have I known anyone to get e-mails like what Telus gives out, they seem to protect your identity more than Telus does.

Honestly, I started downloading about 4 days ago as a friend of a friend suggested Vuze because it was easy to use. And it was...
I downloaded 5 movies (star trek, boondock saints, wolverine, the hangover, and zombieland).
I was sited for the zombieland download.

I was under the impression if you "seed" you are letting people download from you?
And I think i'm called a Leech? because Once I downloaded the movies i removed that file from seeding. doesn't that take away any uploading abilities?

Well if you're downloading a pack of stuff, or pretty much any torrent with more than one file, and you have encryption on then whoever is protecting their stuff doesn't know what you're upping/downing, even if they have your IP. Thusly they can't ever say "we have records he downloaded this file" all they can say is "he downloaded this torrent, which contained this file, amongst others" which I doubt would hold up if they wanted your ISP to cut you off.

Yes, you are correct in that "seeders" are the people uploading the torrent, and "leechers" are one who download, but don't upload to at least 1:1. The thing is, as you download you also upload, so even if you delete the torrent you have uploaded at least a little bit.

The thing with torrenting/etc made easy, is that a lot of people get into it and get in trouble without knowing what they're doing.
