Broken Parking meter?

What's the protocol when your parking meter just eats coins?

CRS 11-04-2009 05:50 PM

Write a note saying it is broken. Record you putting money into the meter and not showing any time.

if you get ticketed (which you may), go dispute it and send/show them the video. Make sure you show where you are, the meter and your car/plate.

It also helps if you happen to be in front of a business, to maybe go tell them that the meter is out of order and they might give the meter checker a heads up when they come by.

You can phone the number on the parking meter.

Yeah, it is understandable though. The Parking Authority can't really believe anyone as anyone can say it is broken and avoid paying. So this is why you had to record the video.

buddy 11-05-2009 04:44 PM

call the number on the meter, the operator will ask about the meter number, how much you put in and your license plate number...

they will tell you how much time the money you put in are good for and til when based on the rate where you parked ...

and if you already have the pay-by-phone account set up, they will text you when the time is up, all you have to do is to call back and authorize another certain amount ... no more looking for coins, buying coffees or hot dogs you dun want and run back to meter while hoping the city worker didn't beat you to it ...

Groot 11-05-2009 05:18 PM

this is off topic but i remember when the parking meters use to have that handle thing and you just twist it when you put money into the parking meter... you could rig it by turning the handle thing half way and then you slam the handle and the coin would go in and give you more then what you paid for xD

InvisibleSoul 11-05-2009 06:50 PM

You're not allowed to park at a broken meter. If you put in coins and it doesn't register, tough cookies. You're supposed to move your car to another spot, or take the risk of getting a ticket.

The meters in Victoria actually have this written right on them.

you are correct sir , there is some sort of bylaw that says if the meter is broken then GTFO and go to another spot

Finally a correct answer as InvisibleSoul is absolutely correct.

They have them written on the meters here as well. As already said, you're SoL. Hope you didn't put into a toonie.

If you called the number on the meter, then you do what the person on the other end tells you to do.

Dude read my post, it's quoted on the City's Website and in the bylaw

http://vancouver.ca/engsvcs/parking/...art/meters.htm

Just because a Parking Officer said you can stay doesn't mean it's permitted.

buddy 11-14-2009 01:20 PM

^ you must be right .. I assume the parking offiers DO take care of the meters ...

racerman88 11-14-2009 01:49 PM

pay by phone or move to the next meter otherwise risk a ticket. There is a bylaw about staying at a broken meter.

wing_woo 11-14-2009 03:46 PM

Most of them don't work. When it ate my loonie, I called to report it and she said many of them don't work and she told me to either pay the service fee to pay by phone or risk the meter eating my coins. I moved to the next meter and sure enough, ate my loonie again. Seems almost like they want people to give up paying cash so they can get you to pay the extra service fee for pay on the phone service.
