Issues With Wireless Connection Cutting Out When Downloading PS3 Updates - Help!

Hey guys,

I wanted to ask you all a question...I think i may know the answer, but i wanted to get some confirmation as I'm not really a technical person when it comes to computers and networking.

I'm currently using a wireless router for wifi around the apt and for the PS3 to play online etc...

The router I am using is a Linksys WRT54G, Version 8.

Now typically I have no issues with my internet signal anywhere in the apartment. I do download a lot of torrents, but I havnt had too many problems with my router crapping out. I probably have to power cycle my modem to reset it once every few weeks to a month...maybe less frequently.

The problem i'm having is specifically with my PS3 when it comes to having to download game and system updates.

What keeps happening is that everytime I try to update the system, the download will run anywhere between 2% and 80% and then just stop...I can sometimes attempt to download the file maybe 4 or 5 times (sometimes once or twice) consecitively before the router craps out and i completely lose the signal. I then have to power cycle the router again to get the signal up and running again. Then when i attempt to download updates, again, it keeps going over and over again. And then finally, sometimes after the 10th try, sometimes after the 20th try, and sometimes after the 30th + try, it finally successfully downloads 100%...

But this is frigin annoying as hell...especially cuz i'm trying to play COD MW2, and there are always many system updates when the game first comes out due to bugs and what not...

I've spent pretty much the entire day trying to download the 1.03 update with zero success...I've probably attempted it about 60 times today and have had to power cycle the router maybe 25 times...annoying as hell..

Anyways...anyone know what may be causing this issue? My guess is the router needs to go...get one that is more reliable...if this is the case, anyone have any recomendations on a reasonably priced one I should get?

If there may be something else causing this issue, any other ideas?

Thanks for your help

You have to disable the media server feature inyour ps3 or something along those lines. Pm me if t doesn't work and when I get home I'll double check. I had the exact same problem and use the same router but diFferent revision.

if you can, plug the PS3 into the router at least to update, or move your modem/router to the PS3. Alternately download updates and manually add the with a flash drive, I'm not sure if you can do game updates like that though.

Same situation as me. All the same hardware but i can't remember what version my WRT54G is. After I disabled the media server on the ps3 it worked fine.

Hey guys,

Turned off the media server feature and it worked.
This is awesome...man i've been having this issue for the past couple years with all my game updates and system updates...

No need to spend money on a new router is great news to me!

Thanks everyone!

so the media server stuff is what causes that?

this is one of the things i hate about my ps3. had to dl a 304mb (!!) update just to play resistance 2 and it kept failing at 60%.

Thats just you. I defraged my PS3 and no longer have the network glitch using wifi in my home. give it a try.

as for updates failing, well thats only related to the networking problem. i love my ps3 and would never get anything else. updates are awesome as it continues to make the software and games better.

also if your downloads seem to take longer, defrag it and if that doesn't do it stop being cheap and upgrade to a faster internet package.

Yeah if your downloads fail after a certain percentage and your internet gets cut out, try turning off/disable the media server. Its under the Network Settings menu in the PS3 menus...

I turned it off, and first attempt to download the file I had previously tried to download 30+ times was a success

yet my brothers 60GB has never had an issue running media server while connected to a crappy old D Link wireless router through a bunch of wall. I don't see how this would affect some users but not others, which makes me think it's something outside of the PS3, that the PS3 is being made to compensate for by turning off the media server.
