Rats.

So just after I made breakfast and sat myself down in front of the TV, I see a rat scurrying across my living room.

The second I saw it, I had the instinct to grab my 1/2inch breaker bar from my room and hunted for it. I found it hiding in a little corner beside the bookshelf, and as it ran into a chair, I swung hard and successfully killed it. Killing it was no problem. It was my reaction right after it stopped moving. I dropped my breaker bar and ran outside like a little girl. The rat was dead, I broke the chair, and there was a rat that was killed by a crushing blow from pure hard steel.

Now, normally, dead rodents like roadkill and bugs dont scare me, but dead mice that I just killed and split open, does. This thing was ripped apart from the blow, and there's guts on my floor now. Worst part is, I broke the chair and it was stuck in the split wood about halfway up the shelf. Took me 30 minutes to get the courage to stop squealing near it, and poke it out into a bag to throw it out.

Now I have a few problems.
- How do I know if I have a Rat problem?
- How do I find them and kill them without hunting them down in case I run away like a girl again.

Will post pics of the broken chair in a bit.

I dont want to see the broken chair, i want to see the rat with guts everywhere.

Also, rats are not mice, you mentioned both in your post.

Stop being such a pussy.

I once cornered a rat and had my hockey stick handy. I teed up and when it ran closer to me, I one timed it across the floor to the opposing wall. It was still twitching when I went to it so I quickly snapped a wrister from the rebound. Then it died. G-G-G-GOAL.

Then I took my hockey stick and threw it out.

I think the guts should have been cleaned up by now?

congrats on the killing of your house mouse. we had one in our basement last week (apparently it has a lot to do with recent cold weather). I tried to kill him but he got away, and then showed up again the next day, and again after that - saying hello upstairs and bolting back into the basement every time he was spotted.

we put out rat poison in the basement... dog snuck in and had himself a nice meal of poison. dog survived and after $600 at the vet - we havent seen the mouse in 3 days. If the mouse turns up.... he's going to be acquainted with my good friend, "Cage" and "wd40".

yeah. mechanic took everything apart and found what he thinks is mouse crap/droppnigs in the valley of the engine block, and whatever it was had chewed everything up to make the beginnings of a nest. you can see my other post here looking for oem toyota parts right now

I had a mouse die in my engine bay once...crushed by my battery. Stunk horribly. After i found it, i used tongs to grab its tail. When i threw it away, i swung the mouse by the tail but I didn't release the tongs fast enough so the mouse swung back and hit me by the shoulder

fuck

i was just in ny and at the subway i saw a dead rat that got cut in half by the train.
it was literally about 8 inches long without the tail, and it didnt even have the front legs or head attached. that probably meant this rat was about a foot long, and with the tail probably around 2 feet! holy fuck

We used to have mice; quite annoying.
Getting a cat is actually extremely effective, or even borrowing a cat. They're really low maintenance, but really get the job done. If that isn't an option, there are a few things you can do.

Seal up all the holes that come in from the outside. At first, I didn't think we had any, but upon closer inspection around the house, there were a few.
Check hidden corners for droppings. Check under the sink, behind the door, and any place where food is stored. If you find a lot of droppings.. you have a problem.
Generally, if you see one in the day time, that's a bad sign as well, you probably have more.
Buy sticky traps instead of the traditionally snapping ones and place them in corners or along the edges of the wall in darker areas.

I'll add a bit more later..

hirevtuner 11-13-2009 11:55 AM

get those sticky pads from hardware store and place it in the dark corners of the house and see if any more mice or rats get stuck
they eventually die cuz they cannot escape and eat food

!Tigger 11-13-2009 04:39 PM

they run along the wall, so sticky paper+ traps = win.
