	   | Leonid Meteor Shower

"The first stream crossing on Nov. 17th comes around 0900 UT (4 a.m. EST, 1 a.m. PST). The debris is a diffuse mix of particles from several old streams that should produce a gentle display of two to three dozen meteors per hour over North America. Dark skies are recommended for full effect."http://science.nasa.gov/headlines/y2...eonids2009.htm
who's planning to watch?

On the way to Pitt Lake is a good place to watch. The surrounding mountains block the light pollution without being in too tight to block the sky.http://www.space.com/scienceastronom...ower-2009.html Quote: | The timing: "We predict a sub-storm level outburst on Nov. 17, 2009, peaking sometime between 21:34 and 21:44 UT," Cooke said. That favors observers in Asia, although Cooke won't rule out a nice show over North America when darkness falls hours after the peak. "I hope so," he said. "It's a long way to Mongolia." |

Where abouts near Pitt Lake and any other spots that are closer for a good viewing? haha
Noob question: "peaking sometime between 21:34 and 21:44 UT," what time does that translate to for us here in Vancouver; PST?

Looks like it's going to be a rainy November 17th, would that effect the viewing? Would rain make it better or easier to see or vice-versa?

Problem with most places closer to town is the ambient light - if you can't see stars, you won't see meteors. Quote: | Noob question: "peaking sometime between 21:34 and 21:44 UT," what time does that translate to for us here in Vancouver; PST? | Subtract 8 hours from Universal Time (aka GMT)... that would put the peak shower about 13:34-13:44... or 1:30pm. Quote: | Looks like it's going to be a rainy November 17th, would that effect the viewing? Would rain make it better or easier to see or vice-versa? | Uhhh...
No, rain won't affect viewing at all. CLOUDS, on the other hand...

Anyone from the lower mainland should go to Burnaby Mountain, really dark up there and above city lights.

"Above" really doesn't help that much... plus half the sky is still blocked.

Originally Posted by no_mercy is there a place near or at cypress? | The viewpoint isn't bad if most of the action is to the south, but there's still a lot of light pollution. You'd need to get around to the north side to get clear of that.
We went to Whytecliff park by Horseshoe Bay once to see a comet, not too much light pollution there, but the mountains/islands are in so tight, it really
blocks a lot of the view.
