Dog pulling on walks.

Problem is dog gets all excited to go out so even tho i make him sit before we leave the house with me in front he still starts pulling when we get going. The worst part is when I take him on a long run/walk on leash he'll stop pulling on the way back cuz he's tired out. Any quick fixes for this so he starts the walk stayind behind me?
While i've tried the direction changing with rewards to get him to stay behind me it gets annoying after awhile. I guess I could try sticking to it.

threezero 11-14-2009 12:48 AM

one method i have seen the caesar milan use that I think is very logical and simple. carry a cane or umbella out on your walk. use it to block the dog when he steps in front of you. use it as an extension to your arm.

or you can try out the various "lazy ppl who don't like to train" products like gentle leader, anti pulling harnesses,
choke chain/pinch collar is another choice too but make sure you know how to use it PROPERLY

J____ 11-14-2009 04:18 AM

my min pin does that like mad. i ahve to use a haultie collar to get him to stay put. i'll try the stick thing.

The direstion changing with rewards works you just gota stick to it I had a Staffordshire/ boxer he did the same thing and weighed 110 lbs and pulled like a Clydesdale

Fuck training a 7 month old pitbull is... yeah

Had it for...less than a week
Thanks for that cane tip, sounds like it might work

BTW can someone explain why last week when I was walking him, he suddenly got into some temper tantrum, I thought he was angry at me and he kept running in circles around me, but he was just angry at the leash really, but still was really weird

You probably had him in a confined area for too long. He had too much energy built up and he went nuts. I take my dog for 3 walks a day. If I miss 1 walk, he goes ape shit in the backyard and does laps, or, sometimes, he'll go psycho when I do take him for his next walk. I've got a pit/rotti/mastiff cross.

fliptuner 11-14-2009 01:19 PM

If the dog is not paying attention to you, or he starts to walk too far ahead, tap him on his hind quarter with your toe so he feels it (not kicking, just like someone tapping you on your shoulder at a club to get your attention) and give him a simultaneous verbal correction like "HEY!!!" or "HEEL!!!". It will break his fixation on whatever he's looking at or smelling and get him to pay attention to you.

Thats the correct way to train a dog to heel. It is a skill that the owner has to learn. Go to an obedience school and do yourself and your dog a favour. Direction changes of 90 and 180 degrees coupled with correct timing of commands and corrections will get you and your pooch off on the correct foot. That reminds me, even starting out with the correct foot when you are walking can help the dog. Direction changes teach the dog to pay attention to YOU.
With someone teaching you, you will have your dog heeling properly in little more than a week, with two 15-25 minute training sessions a day.
Just remember dogs are easy to train, its training owners how to train a dog that can be difficult. :)

Good luck.

Fuck Caesar Milan, the guys a fraud,he's not the magical dog trainer that he's made out to be.

Mr.dogwhisperer uses electric shock collars to train dogs, people just don't see it due to camera angles. Why do you think alot of the dogs on the show wear bandanas? it's to hide the shock collar they are wearing.

have you noticed, most of the time when Caesar is training a dog,he always has one hand either behind his back or it's out of sight from the camera.

I had a pitbull for 10 years,I currently have another bully breed, most of my friends have pitbulls too. They can be a handfull.

If the dog throws a temper tantrum, grab it by the ruff and slam him down onto his back, hold him there until he is calm, them release.

use a choke collar, learn how to use it properly and also the correct way to put it on.It will work well on stopping him from pulling.

one last thing, male pitbulls are very dominant, they will constantly challenge you for the spot of alpha role.Don't show him you a weak, make sure your the alpha.

Ducdesmo 11-14-2009 06:14 PM

Hahah my 6 month old pit used to pull super hard, but by changing directions I was able to get her to walk with me, although NOT beside me just yet. She will always inch out a foot ahead of me. Also giving her a good workout before your walk works too.

i will check that when I catch him on tv. But Ive seen him work with really aggresive dogs than even their owner cannot put a collar on the dog from little dog to big dogs with his bare hand and body language. He did "invented" a collar that is design to always sit up high on the neck for better control of the dog.

Also shock collar when use correctly isn't as bad as everybody make them to be.
I've use choke collar and pinch collar on my GSD before, it just increase his aggresiveness because its hard for me to give a effective correction when he is already pulling and lunging what end up happening is choking the dog/ applying constant pain and not getting the point across and making it worse.

I still use the shock collar on my GSD right now he loves it when I put it on him (means either training time or outside time) though he doesn't need much correction anymore and I have greater confidence in off leash control knowing if all else fail I have a backup tool. If anything it takes more understanding of how an animal learns a behaviour to effectively use a shock collar. You can ruin a dog in 5 mins if you hand the remote to clueless dog owner.

When you watch the show, you only see the good stuff, all the bad stuff has been edited out,who knows what he does to the dogs behind the camera when it's not rolling.

Do people actually think he can change a dogs behavior by just saying "pssshh" and tapping them on the side?

He also charges $100,000 for private lessons.

hmm, I do wlak him at least 3 times a day, he's so sweet though, I don't think he's trying to assert dominance though, but yeah I'm sure he has too much energy, sometimes freaks out around the house. But yeah he definitely is in his crate for quite a bit

itsallaboutgz lol yeah i'm in the same position!

BTW does anyone muzzle their pitbull here? I've been ignoring it, also does anyone use the sorta chest + neck leash? I've been told they behave much better with those

I'm not really down to muzzle my dog, but I just hate it when people are like "aww he's so sweet, what kind of dog is he?" and then you tell them he's a pitbull, and they just instantly freak out or w/e and "you know you have to put a muzzle on that!"

spyker 11-14-2009 09:26 PM

I have never put a muzzle on any of my dogs,I never will too.If your walking your dog and it's muzzled, what if a dog came out of nowhere and started attacking your dog? if it's muzzled, how else is it suppose to defend itself.

A few months ago I was walking my dog with a friend and her dog around the Brentwood area in Burnaby, out of nowhere this dog came out, sniffed my dog, then attacked it,I kicked this dog hard, then it backed off, went to go for my friends dog,but took one look at how vicious she was on the leash and decided it wanted nothing to do with it.You just never know what could happen,I always put a collar with huge spikes on my dog, plus I also carry a knife in my pocket just incase.

Just so you and others with pitbulls know, our Premier Gordon Campbell got rid of the dangerous dog act a few years ago, pitbulls do not need to be muzzled now.

I highly recommend you get a spike collar,it's not just for looks, but to help protect your dogs neck from dog bites.

http://www.garciasdogaccs.com/

This is where I got my collar and harness from, they are great people to deal with, you won't find collars like these for sale here......only in Texas.

ilvtofu 11-15-2009 09:42 AM

My pitbull pup just got stitches in his ear a few weeks ago, that collar would've been handy, although he's a little bit too silly and sweet and you don't want him jumping all over you with that thing on

EDIT: BTW i googled and i think it's only if your dog has history you have to muzzle it

spyker 11-15-2009 10:20 AM

You only put the collar on the dog when you walk him, besides, you don't want strangers touching your dog while it's on the leash.I don't allow people I don't know touch my dog, they ask,but I tell them "no"....unless it's a hot girl, then I will bend the rules.

Ducdesmo 11-15-2009 04:32 PM

I never used a muzzle on my dog..why would you?

BTW, I just tried a prong/pinch collar for the past couple days for corrections and it is working great. My dog walks besides me and automatically sits down besides me when we stop walking. Its not perfect just yet (especially with distractions), but it's only been 2 days.

Also spyker, you did the right thing by kicking that other dog off and doing what an alpha dog would do in the situtation. I've been reading this article by Suzzane Clothier "He just wants to say Hi" and it's a good resource for understanding dog-dog introductions/attacks. Sorry this is a bit off topic.

that dog was extremely lucky my right hand was bound to the leash and I was not able to reach into my pocket.

After that incident,I have now trained my dog to walk on my left side and my left hand now holds the leash.

NiceGirl 11-15-2009 10:42 PM

i was going to suggest the prong collar too. we use that on my dog

my dog used to pull me a lot (he's 90lbs, i'm 120lbs), so we went to the trainer for a private lesson and she said that when your dog pulls or walks in front of you, the proper way to correct it is by doing fast and short tugs on the leash, not long tugs - long tugs causes the dog to tense up and become more alert, as if there is danger around. if the dog is far in front of you then a series of short fast tugs. Also, the prong collar needs to be high up on the dog's neck (it's more sensitive there).
And you're right about changing directions, it ensures that the dog keeps paying attention to you.

+1, get a stick and block your dog, it will learn to stay behind you

If ur that worried about it buy some dog repellent. I bought some(was only $20 at Husky) and carry it with me all the time with my dog or without. I paid my friend $25 to spray him with it and he wanted me to take him to the hospital after lol.

If for some reason my dog attacked urs and u stab my dog to death, u better keep that knife in ur hand cuz ur gonna need it. where as if u sprayed my dog it would teach him a lesson and i still prob wouldnt be too happy but ide understand. Also if some big rottweiller or mastiff is attacking u, and or ur dog it is gonna be extremely hard to stab him without u getting fucked up in the process, also with 2 dogs going nuts u have the chance of stabbing ur own dog. Where as with the spray u can be metres away where ur safe and if ur dog does get sprayed he wont be seriously hurt and will be ok in an hour, compared to having a big wound and a bigger vet bill, or worse dead.

First of all,how are you going to spray a dog when they are both moving around quickly when fighting.

The knife is the last resort, and it will only come out if the situation absolutely calls for it.I won't stab a dog,I will slash it across the back,I have no intentions of killing any dog, just to stop them.I only had to pull out the knife once, did not have to use it cuase I screamed at the owner to get his fucking dog or I will fuck it up(the dog was very aggressive and should not have been off the leash at all),he took me seriously when he saw this fucked up looking knife in my hand and how angry I was.

During the many years of dog ownership,I have had to choke dogs, punch them on the head & back, kick them in the balls, all this right in front of the owners because they did not take me seriously and it was too late when they did try to intervene.

If your dog attacked mine, due to you not stopping a attack before it happens,I would not hesitate to do what I got to do,if you were to try and do something to me(even though it's your fault 100% the attack happened),I would have no problems sending both of you to the hospital.

It's either a knife, cop batton or brass knuckles, take your pick.

This doesn't exactly sound like last resort:

You're just a panzy. Yeah, right, cause there are SOOOOOOO MANY dogs out there that are left loose that are just looking to come attack you and your dog. If you have had to choke dogs, punch them in the head and back, kick them in the head, there is probably something wrong with YOU, not the dogs...

90% of these encounters that I have had,was at a "on leash park",these stupid owners let their dogs run loose in a park, when (a)the dogs are not allowed to be off leash.
(b)these dogs sholuld not be off leash at all,due to their aggressive behavior and/or lack of control with the owners.

You ever been to Trout Lake? I have seen so many dogs there that are off leash and running around being aggressive towards other dogs,50% of the dogs there have no business being off leash, yet the owners don't do a fucking thing about it,they just stand there and watch, being the fucking retard irresponsible owners they are.

let me ask you something....have you ever seen two dogs get into a fight? have you ever seen what a dog looks like after it has lost a fight or been attacked by a much stronger and aggressive dog?

Do you have any idea how much it cost in vet bills to care for a animal after it has been in a situation like that?

Do you even own a dog at all?.....if not, then STFU cause you have no clue about what your talking about.
