I would prefer if they had a healthy respect for the limits of our intellectual capacity as human beings.

I lol'd hard at this one
maybe it was a remote controlled bird? :D

I agree. 0.0001% chance is 0.0001% too much.

I don't think this is true. I'm pretty sure there are a lot of scientist who believe in various religions.. But they separate their work and their religion.

ie. a scientists who studies at CERN with the LHC. they don't have to believe that the world was created by a big bang.. but they can still be interested in what would happen if we collided two protons at near light speed. This is completely independent of their religion. They just want to study the phenomena?

I wasn't exactly being serious there...

you christians say the darndest things. (and by darndest i mean fucking stupid)

lets not forget that several hundreds of years ago, we believed that the sun rotated around the earth...solely because of religion. intellectual capacity of human beings...smh

LHC (Large Hadron Collider) Rap

The rap pretty much explains the purpose of the LHC.

The facts are spot-on. Too bad we can't say too much about the scientists' dancing.. Enjoy. :D

That is an unbelievably stupid thing to say... what is our "capacity"? Back when we were cavemen? This is all part of our learning process... if we can under stand it, is it not within our "intellectual capacity"? Or are you content with knowing what you know and never learning more? If so, go back to shitting your pants and crying to getting what you need as you imply that we should never explore the unknown and we should just be content with what we know.

StylinRed 11-15-2009 05:55 PM

Sounds like these news sources are running with some scientists musings

first of all the the bible said nothing about what revolved around what.
it was merely those catholics that dictated what people believed. they still do.

i'm baptist and i find it really offensive that you think i'm fucking stupid because i'm christian.

and if you didn't know. being catholic and christian are two very different things.

How would people from the future know that this machine will "destroy the world"? Clearly it won't, or else there would be no future. Unless this is some kind of weird "Back to the Future" thing where people in a picture slowly fade away because the past is changing...:high:

I don't know what our capacity is, but I know it's finite. Having said that it's one thing to seek to understand the world we live in, and quite another to conduct an experiment which could potentially destroy humanity. It is not right for a small group of scientists to take a risk like this without due regard for the rights of everyone else.

Please point out where I said that science should be frowned upon? All I am saying is that we should respect the limits of science. Unless of course you happen to know everything there is to know... do you?

no_mercy 11-16-2009 07:41 PM

i believe that without science progressing, our society/economy etc. would be very saturated... by that I mean we wouldn't be gaining more knowledge. Look what science have done to us. All our computers, cell phones, transportation, television, cars, airplanes, everything... all this stuff is science in the technological side. You don't know what other great discovery from the LHC will lead to another innovation.

So i fully support this research!

slammer111 11-16-2009 09:22 PM

^ +1 Science = finding out and understanding stuff we didn't know/understand before. The LHC is pretty much the ONLY way (based on current technology) to find out if the Higgs Boson really does exist. Of course if it does, it just validates our understanding of matter. If it turns out our current models are wrong, this could lead to the rewriting of all of our scientific textbooks; even more so than when they found out the world wasn't flat.

This kind of research doesn't just lead to more gadgets. It could lead to huge advances in medicine, travel, stuff that nobody today can even imagine. I'm all for it too.

x2, i couldnt agree more. Finding the Higgs boson would be a huge step for humanity.

at what cost though?
what if shit hits the fan and somethings goes horribly wrong?
i don't think it's worth it.

CP.AR 11-17-2009 12:04 AM

I for one, really think that the LHC will bring the greatest scientific discovery all of humanity has seen to date.

I really believe that deep down, this could pave the path to a real life "Warp Drive" (yes, being a star trek fan does make me a bit crazy...)

i think it's safe to assume that scientists want to live as much as we do. if they knew we all had a high chance of dying due to some mini black hole, then would you think they persists this research? they would want to live as much as we do to learn and understand the result of the proton proton collision... they wouldnt want to die and learn nothing from it...

there have been theoretical physicists working and proving theories on why this won't happen or very highly unlikely won't happen.

we all will benefit from this. not only in a sense that higgs boson complete the standard model of physics, but what new data and techniques can we extract from this that will be a leap forward in our society.

sort of what quantum mechanics did for us and etc etc.

Don't worry, if it's too much for one person, ppl just specialize. It's like how one person doesn't build a house.. a whole team does it.

Same with science.

Only a fraction of the ppl in the world actually get educated. So our capacity as a whole is way bigger than you think.

And it's not like ppl memorize everything.. we have books and hard drives to store knowledge.

Strictly speaking, the protestant reformation was still kind of going on when that happened, and Protestantism (baptists included) are still a sect of christianity, as are catholics...so really, Sid's kind of right.

91LS-VTak 11-17-2009 09:07 PM

I don't mean to alarm some of you, but apparantely the LHC is gonna be starting up again soon. The end of the world nears (queue spooky music)

Without risk their is no reward.

nack 11-17-2009 09:28 PM

i qoute from the g.i. joe movie "science requires SACRIFICE!!"

RRxtar 11-17-2009 10:31 PM

1: this thing is going to do its thing eventually, so if it were people from the future making a bird shit on it, apparently there are still people in the future with an ability do travel in time, so apparently this thing doesnt destroy all everything.

2: if the future people REALLY wanted this thing to not work, they would probably try harder than making a bird shit on something.

and 3rd: the future people have alot more to worry about that this thing, like how we prevent the lizard people taking over in 3 years. or whatever.
