maybe it was a remote controlled bird? :D Quote:

ie. a scientists who studies at CERN with the LHC. they don't have to believe that the world was created by a big bang.. but they can still be interested in what would happen if we collided two protons at near light speed. This is completely independent of their religion. They just want to study the phenomena? |

lets not forget that several hundreds of years ago, we believed that the sun rotated around the earth...solely because of religion. intellectual capacity of human beings...smh |
LHC (Large Hadron Collider) Rap The rap pretty much explains the purpose of the LHC. The facts are spot-on. Too bad we can't say too much about the scientists' dancing.. Enjoy. :D http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j50ZssEojtM |
^ dunt forget virgin birth ;P |
LOL@ the FOX news source!! |

Sounds like these news sources are running with some scientists musings Quote:
and lol at all the self-appointed PHD geniuses in this thread (even if u were a phd it wouldnt matter) |

it was merely those catholics that dictated what people believed. they still do. i'm baptist and i find it really offensive that you think i'm fucking stupid because i'm christian. and if you didn't know. being catholic and christian are two very different things. |
How would people from the future know that this machine will "destroy the world"? Clearly it won't, or else there would be no future. Unless this is some kind of weird "Back to the Future" thing where people in a picture slowly fade away because the past is changing...:high: |

i believe that without science progressing, our society/economy etc. would be very saturated... by that I mean we wouldn't be gaining more knowledge. Look what science have done to us. All our computers, cell phones, transportation, television, cars, airplanes, everything... all this stuff is science in the technological side. You don't know what other great discovery from the LHC will lead to another innovation. So i fully support this research! |
^ +1 Science = finding out and understanding stuff we didn't know/understand before. The LHC is pretty much the ONLY way (based on current technology) to find out if the Higgs Boson really does exist. Of course if it does, it just validates our understanding of matter. If it turns out our current models are wrong, this could lead to the rewriting of all of our scientific textbooks; even more so than when they found out the world wasn't flat. This kind of research doesn't just lead to more gadgets. It could lead to huge advances in medicine, travel, stuff that nobody today can even imagine. I'm all for it too. |

x2, i couldnt agree more. Finding the Higgs boson would be a huge step for humanity. |

what if shit hits the fan and somethings goes horribly wrong? i don't think it's worth it. |
I for one, really think that the LHC will bring the greatest scientific discovery all of humanity has seen to date. I really believe that deep down, this could pave the path to a real life "Warp Drive" (yes, being a star trek fan does make me a bit crazy...) |
Quote:
there have been theoretical physicists working and proving theories on why this won't happen or very highly unlikely won't happen. we all will benefit from this. not only in a sense that higgs boson complete the standard model of physics, but what new data and techniques can we extract from this that will be a leap forward in our society. sort of what quantum mechanics did for us and etc etc. |

Same with science. Only a fraction of the ppl in the world actually get educated. So our capacity as a whole is way bigger than you think. And it's not like ppl memorize everything.. we have books and hard drives to store knowledge. |

I don't mean to alarm some of you, but apparantely the LHC is gonna be starting up again soon. The end of the world nears (queue spooky music) |

Without risk their is no reward. |
i qoute from the g.i. joe movie "science requires SACRIFICE!!" |
1: this thing is going to do its thing eventually, so if it were people from the future making a bird shit on it, apparently there are still people in the future with an ability do travel in time, so apparently this thing doesnt destroy all everything. 2: if the future people REALLY wanted this thing to not work, they would probably try harder than making a bird shit on something. and 3rd: the future people have alot more to worry about that this thing, like how we prevent the lizard people taking over in 3 years. or whatever. |
