pick-ups with empty cargo bed? guys can you enlighten me, what's with all the pick up drivers on the street driving with their big ass pick ups but with empty cargo bed? now I uderstand some need it for work but 99% percent of the time I see them having a mere broom in the bed..a corolla could do the same. Couldnt they get a smaller truck? ie: ranger or tacoma. |
quit trolling. you also posted this in the island off topic. people need cars for different reasons, some times its a lifestyle choice over necessity. do you use your car for its exact intended purpose? |
Yeah, because a small car or SUV can haul around a trailer or a camper just fine. Think about the intended purposes of a truck, beyond the simple fact that it's got a bed where you can put shit. Towing capacities, ranges/limits, etc. all mean a small truck like a Ranger/Tacoma (that really don't get the greatest fuel economy either) are simply incapable of accomplishing. |
OP, I have lots of stuff in the trunk of my truck......... a Ridgeline. Test drive one. You'll be pleasantly surprised at the handling and comfort. Plus the towing capability among other things. It's also incredible in the snow with its 4x4 capability. |
I post in the Island because apaprently more pick up drivers over there than vancouver so I can get some realistic feedback. Seriously, how many times a year you actually tow your boat? and when you are not towing your boat, couldnt you be driving a smaller sedan instead? |
|
So, what you're saying is they should spend another $20-40g on another vehicle, that they have to insure, store, park, etc. just so they're not driving their truck around. Right. The shop where I work has a handful of customers who do in fact have two vehicles, but the reason they have the truck is for those 4-6 months a year where they do in fact hook up the boat trailer, or slap on the fifth wheel, camper trailer, etc. to haul around. And then factor in the other reason you see these big trucks around. Same reason you see all these MDX, RDX, RX400, RX430, X5, X6, X3, ML, GL, LR3, Range Rovers, etc. on the road. Do you suppose all of those people need those gas guzzling SUVs too? I'm not even going to point out the obvious drivers of those vehicles, as it really doesn't matter any more than what you're implying with the obvious drivers of big trucks. |

I could understand more when one wants to drive a big ass luxury SUV such as X5 or ML, because the car itself is luxury, comfortable, fast, and also is a symbol of success and status. But what does a pick up truck represent? a blue collar labourer? what kind of lifestyle does it show off? and the car is neither comfortable, nor fast or luxurious. I just dont get it |
A pickup truck is utilitarian. It's purpose is for work. Someone powered by mom and dad wouldn't understand "work", which is why we apparently need to explain it to you. |

I work in UBC's Finance department. everyday I see people driving big ass pick ups to UBC..and they are not the utility workers, they are office staff. So obviously they do not need these trucks for their work. Maybe they are the ones not understanding work? what frustrates me is that finance's parking lot is extremely tight..some people bring their huge 4x4 with added rear wheels..that will require them to park inbetween two lots, wasting precisous space. |

Come ask for input in VLS |
I drive a pick up cause I enjoy being able to use the box and I do a lot of camping which helps me carry gear and get firewood. So what people drive all sorts of vehicles, those exact same people make fun and wonder why some of you drive lowered cars which have to go sideways over speed bumps and can't leave the garage when it snows. |

Do you know what all those staff who drive those big trucks at UBC use their vehicles for in their off-time? Does it matter to you what they do with their money, or their vehicles? Is a big-ass honkin' SUV that represents "luxury" really more of a necessity than a big truck? Most people who have big trucks do in fact use them at some point throughout the year, for purposes other than simply driving around. Unlike those people who drive "luxury" SUVs that do in fact just drive around in the city, never going beyond a 50km radius. |
don't get me wrong, I have no problem with other people's preference for vehicles, but as I see it daily it just makes me curious. At the same time like you said moms who drives a ML and Range Rovers constant below 50km/h and soley for buying groceries are equally pointless...to me at least. |
There are plenty of douche bags out there driving trucks just to feel big on the road, while at the same time, there are plenty of people who drive trucks for legitimate reasons. |
ae98, i presume your Chinese, do bother arguing lah. cause gwai lo will always defend their trucks. no racist |

You obviously have never sat in some of the Ford pickup trucks. The interior on them are actually nicer then some luxury suvs. Chip that same truck and you have almost as much hp and way more torque then the bmw and mb suvs. Explain to me how you can fit a camper or tow a 5th wheel with a X5. Hell lets see how safe it is to have to stop a 6000 lb wakeboard boat with the X5's short wheelbase. What kind of mileage are you gonna make with the X5 towing in the mountains? My parents have a Dodge 3500 Diesel. With a camper and towing a 5000 lb boat (combined weight or truck, trailer, and camper was just over 16000 lbs) they were making just over 20 mpg on the way to Osoyoos. Other then through manning park they almost never had to take it out of 6th gear. |
You should see what my daily driver was you would be shocked lol |
