I'm looking for some pretty beginner kit right now.
I have 2x the shoot through umbrellas (got them off ebay) and they're pretty good, they work well in diffusing the flash. Not really sure if they're as good as a softbox, haven't used one before. But they do they're job.

If you're looking at getting remote triggers, I'd get the RF-602s if you're on a budget. Also look into getting their flashes as well like the YN460-II. They're decent quality and they do their job.

Just started doing strobist stuff and my kit right now is:
2x lighstands
2x shoot through umbrellas
5in1 reflector
YN460-II
1x RF-602 Tx 2x Rx
SB600

Cost me about $150 minus the SB600. I guess its a pretty hefty "noob tax", but theres no way I can dish out almost 3x the amount for a pro level kit. I've got everything I need to just play around

I got them all as separate sellers:

Lightstands: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...ht_4372wt_1137

Flash/Umbrella Brackets:
http://shop.ebay.com/mkstudio2012/m....&_trksid=p3686 (but my package took a while in customs)

Triggers:
http://cgi.ebay.com/RF-602-Wireless-...ht_1774wt_1137

Got my reflector from focalprice.com and the umbrellas were just the cheapest ones I found at the time
