Console controller vs Mouse/keyboard

Alright guys, I ALWAYS have this argument with console gamers: Which is better? Console controller or Mouse/keyboard?!

for FIRST PERSON SHOOTERS. actually... for all kinda shooters, even the 3rd person types (like gears of war, mirror's edge etc...)

basically any game that requires or is heavily based on real-time "twitch" reactions (as opposed to turn based games).

i admit i'm not very informed of how GOOD the best FPS players are on xbox/ps3

but c'mon, i can't imagine them being anywhere as good as the best keyboard/mouse players.

i mean just the pinpoint accuracy of the mouse, and the ability to do crazy things like 180 or 360 or any kinda turns in a split second.

do you guys agree or disagree?

even the fact that you have a keyboard and you have a billion buttons around your movement hand, you can hotkey a billion things.

im trying to find some vids to show what i mean but it's late and my brain aint workin

but here's some shit im definitely sure someone with a fucking controller could never do.

note the amount of shots that are successful when both parties are in the air moving in different directions:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iZg2vgGG8y8

the spy videos, just note the way he can turn, and re-disguise (to a different class), bring up dead ringer, and switch weapons all in 1 second. that is not possible on a controller, i feel sorry for anyone who plays tf2 on xbox. (oh and those crit shots from his revolver are all head shots)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hipH4f7-V-M

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IJik-4EA4UM

i duno i can't really find anything else right now or think of anything.

c'mon mouse and keyboard supporters :P

or you pro controller people, show me some vids.

EDIT: how the FUCK do i make a poll? mods?

i agree with you, keyboard/mouse is way better.

twitchyzero 11-18-2009 09:12 AM

i dont think there's any argument/debate here...KB/mouse wins hands down
if it's sports game or action adventure games/fight games i prefer the controller though.

Ferra 11-18-2009 09:16 AM

KB + mouse > controller

I am sure some people play better with their controllers than with KB+mouse, but at the end of the day, mouse will give u much greater precision than controller, and the best KB+mouse players will always be better than the best controller players.

Great thing about controller tho is that you can play comfortably sitting on your living room sofa.

It also seems that the newer games coming out on consoles and PC are adjusting their gameplay to make it easier to play on controller...i.e. requiring less accuracy and precision....there is no need to aim at the head of your enemy a few pixel across like you do in CS

underscore 11-18-2009 09:21 AM

I've always sucked with kb/m, I'm not sure why but I can never get the mouse sensitivity right, I'm either unable to control the aim and it's flying all over (can't lock on a target) or it's too low and I can't do full spins to track a guy in one move. That and I'm bad at key combos and stuff, I can only work WASD, FR shift and space without getting messed up. If I play A LOT in a short amount of time I can get fairly good/average at CS:S, UTIII and stuff, but otherwise I blow chunks. I suck with the 360 controller too, not sensitive enough (all or nothing)

Though out of boredom I'm trying to get a beat up PS3 or 360 controller to rip apart and try to hook up to a kb/m for shits and giggles and see if I can make it work.

KB + Mouse> Controller anyone that thinks differently is an idiot.
I dont know anyone that uses a computer for gaming anymore. I have a pretty good laptop and i would never buy a game for it over a console. Actually i would never pick up another pc game in my life. Console > cpu.

lolwut?

Did you just contradict and call yourself an idiot?

underscore 11-18-2009 11:12 AM

he's saying a kb/m is better than a controller, but he still prefers console gaming. read.

ienhz 11-18-2009 11:21 AM

For FPS, PC>360>PS3.

PS3 controller is just outdated now. I wish I could get a modded 360 controller that worked on my PS3. It's feels so much better for FPS games. Whoever designed the trigger shoulder buttons on the PS3 is an idiot... why would you make it convex? Not to mention that the left analog is still in the wrong place.

The only way i would buy a console game that's available in PC is when I have a crappy computer.
PC games ALWAYS offer you more than on consoles... more options, custom content...etc, and usually cheaper as well.

Biggest problem with PC gaming is, 99% of the factory PC people buy can't play games at all. And there are really very few people who are computer savvy enough to pick out and build their own PC in parts.

Nowadays you can build a PC for under $500 and get performance equivalent to new consoles like PS3 and Xbox360.

I don't think it's dated, more proven as a solid design. I agree on the triggers, they are aesthetically pleasing but not quite as "trigger like" for FPS games. Would be nice if they sold a concave controller or a company made replacement buttons.

I don't get how the left analog is in the wrong place, to me the 360 one is in the wrong place and it feels more natural having both my thumbs as the same, normal angle. For anyone with smaller hands having both sticks at the bottom is better.

Downsides to PC:

-can't play on your couch
-most people don't want a computer hooked to their TV
-cords (unless gamers accept wireless KB/M now, not sure)
-at $500 you can buy any two of the latest consoles, or one console and a bunch of games
-hackers

Sure a company could make PC's that are designed to game, maybe even trim down the OS to optimize gaming. Oh right, that's called a console.

- with PC, You have the "option" of using a controller and play like you do on console. You can get a nice controller for $20-$40.
- I think most people WANT to hook up their computers to their TV, they either just don't know how, or they don't want to buy a new PC just to do that.
- Only the crazy obsessive gamers have problem with wireless control...
- For $200 more, a PC can do so much more tho. (DL & play movies, emails, surf, work...etc)
- Yea...you get more hackers but you can also dl and play games for free :p

to each of their own.
I find my PS3 > 360 controller as it's not as heavy.

KB/Mouse is sure better than controller. But if you go through COD4 training and try the story, you will get use to it. I had doubt with PS3 controller with FPS before, but after COD4 and COD5, it's not a problem at all for COD6. I had COD4 Prestige twice without cheat or glitch. Once with COD5. Even with der riese zombie kill in COD5, I was able to go lv. 38 couple of time with my friend without glitch.

I bought L4D on Xbox 360 a month ago. I played for once and I put it on sale. :p

ienhz 11-18-2009 02:30 PM

Hmm.. maybe I need to spend more time with the PS3 controller. I got MW2 for PS3 so I'll see how that goes.

I've only played Killzone 2 on PS3 and the controls just feel wrong. Might be the game though.

how so? everyone complains about MW2 PC not having a bunch of stuffs like console, dedicated servers, custom contents, leaning....etc etc.
But these are stuffs consoles never had as well!

It sounds stupid...but like IW said, you DO have things like mouse control, text chat..etc which is more than what consoles offer.

Hondaracer 11-18-2009 03:44 PM

lol MW2 is 100 times better on PC, i enjoyed it soooo much more on PC than 360

i bought the 360 version but downloaded the PC version

MUCH better graphics, way more control, using a mouse and keyboard you have the time to notice more things and take better shots, i find console FPS's to just be a twitch fest and im pretty good with a controller on FPS's

yeah please explain, yes, PC version sucks, compared to other PC FPS games, but compared to the 360 version, how does it suck? (okay other than the hackers).

I don't think some of you get what I mean by mouse/keyboard is better than controller. i'm not talking about how the thing feels in your hand.
i'm talking about, how the fuck are you supposed to turn 180 degrees, while switch weapons, aim, headshot the guy, all before he gets his 2nd or 3rd shot off. that is fucking IMPOSSIBLE with a controller.
or i see someone fly across my screen say in the very right corner of my screen (say in halo using one of those trampoline type ramp launcher things), but he's only in my field of view for 1 second. how can i even have time to aim with a controller?

or, strafe circling your opponent while jumping, firing, and switching weapons, changing fire selection type. i mean when i play fps, fuck my left hand looks like it's typing almost. every button around is key'd to something, and i have 5 buttons on my mouse too.

i'd buy an xbox or a ps if they integrated mouse/keyboard for all of it's games and applications. lol.
