US police release YouTube video of 'assault'

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TKhnK...layer_embedded

Californian poice (lol wtf?) have taken the extraordinary step of releasing a controversial video to the public which appears to show a policeman slamming a drunk's head through a train station window.

The footage, taken from the mobile phone of a commuter, shows the officer dragging 37-year-old Michael Gibson off a train in Oakland and then apparently putting his head through a window.

It is unsure whether Mr Gibson stumbled into the glass during a struggle with the police officer or his head was deliberately driven through the window.

When the video appeared on YouTube with the title "Officer breaks window with drunks [sic] face", the Bay Area Rapid Transit (Bart) department released it to the media before the footage went viral, in an attempt at damage limitation.

“We are keenly aware of what YouTube brings to the public,” Commander Daniel Hartwig, of the Bart department, said.

“We want to assure the public that we are moving forward. We are not waiting. We are investigating this to the fullest extent."

Mr Gibson and the police officer, who has not been named, suffered minor cuts in the incident. An investigation is under way into whether the officer used excessive force.

In January, a Bart officer was videoed fatally shooting an unarmed man, Oscar Grant III, an incident that sparked riots after it went viral on YouTube.

Looks to me the officer obviously shifted his weigh to throw the guy into the window pane... you can very obviously see him rotate his hips to generate enough force to push the drunk into the window pane.

Whether he meant to put his head through the window is unclear but I mean what did he expect to happen?? The drunk seemed to be very compliant so I'd go ahead and say wtf? that wasn't necessary...

At 0:36 -> 0:37, there was a cut in video but I don't think that factors into the whole excessive force argument because that was AFTER the cop put his head through the glass.

Cop put his head into the glass on purpose - the breakage was incidental. Who cares? The guy was doing his job.

Also, why wouldn't they have safety glass (that shatters) or the kind with wires meshed in? You would think at a train station, they wouldn't have conventional panes like that.

Didnt look like the cop was intending to break the glass he was probably trying to throw himn against the wall so he could get proper leverage on him. The guys was resisting easiest way is to get leverage either against a wall or throw him to the ground

It looks more like the idiot was RESISTING arrest. I don't think he meant to smash his head through the window.

i wouldnt say he was really resisting arrest until the cop put his head through the glass. at that point i'd feel like the cop was assaulting me and i would probably show a little resistance or defensive action too. i wouldnt let a cop rodney king my ass no matter what i'd fight back even if it resulted in me getting slammed into the ground. if a cop starts punching you and you hold your hand out to block him are you resisting as well?

Looked like the cop was just trying to put him up against a barrier to have an easier time to cuff him (imagine trying to cuff someone when theres nothing infront of them so they could just move forward to not be cuffed) The glass breaking was accidental, to me it honestly looked like that glass broke very very easily.

I'm always ready to scream police brutality but that was just a cop that was trying to do his job. stupid drunk needed to be shown some force since the officer was alone so he wanted to put him against the wall/glass so he can handcuff him unfortunately the glass broke.

At 24 sec. when the cop was trying to swing the left arm of the drunk dude back the drunk's right hand rose to shield his face (natural reaction when pushed toward a wall)

if the drunk had not resisted, his face would not fly forward and his arm would not go up (im guessing his right arm had something to do with the glass breaking as well...difficult to tell at that camera angle)

also, the whole time, the cop's right hand was on the man's left shoulder, if it was behind the drunk's head, than thats another story...mans just doing his job, let him be.

finally...a cop in the right place and right time

Ezekiel 25:17. The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of the darkness. For he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know I am the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon you.

That guy was clearly resisting arrest. The cop could've slammed him into the walls with the same force and it would just like any other arrest. It's the glass breaking that contributed to the perception of the cop "assaulting" the drunk dude.
