It's the Mazda that’sguaranteed to send rivals into a spin! These illustrations are the bestyet of the forthcoming RX-7– an all-new two-seater sports car, completewith a turbocharged rotary engine.

Although this model will be anatural successor to the RX-8, the logical RX-9 badge is to be shunnedin favour of RX-7 – evoking memories of the rear-wheel-drive Mazdaproduced in various forms between 1978 and 2002.

Reports fromJapan have revealed that new design chief Ikua Maeda has alreadysketched plans for the next RX-7, and is said to be pushing thethree-door model to the firm’s board of directors. Mazda has chosen touse the light and compact Renesis 16X Wankel engine – the same unit asfitted to 2007’s Taiki concept car.

With an equivalentcapacity of 1.6 litres to improve torque, and the addition of aturbocharger to boost power beyond 300bhp, the RX-7 will be much moresporty than the RX-8.

By sticking with a rotary engine, Mazdawill ensure the model can be adapted to run on hydrogen in future.Plus, it would retain the RX-8’s appeal as the only rotary-engined carin production.

Rumours that an RX-7 concept could debut atOctober’s Tokyo Motor Show came to nothing; it may not appear untilnext year’s event. A production model would then follow early in 2011.

it still looks like an RX-8...

Inaii 11-25-2009 12:48 AM

God I hope not. That thing is fucking ugly as shit and doesn't deserve to have the rx7 title on it.

Lomac 11-25-2009 12:49 AM

Interesting. Better not look anything like that concept drawing, though. Talk about hideous...

The_AK 11-25-2009 12:51 AM

Funny you say that the FC3S RX7 rear glass was the largest one ever built for a Japanese vehicle.

InvisibleSoul 11-25-2009 01:15 AM

Front looks like an RX8, rear looks like some BMW.

I think we can all agree the rear looks like a BMW. Front is more like Acura grill, Mazda 6 lights and lower grill and general shape is Sky or Solstice-esque.

Is it just me or does the front really resemble the new TL's?

shenmecar 11-25-2009 09:37 AM

dont ruin the RX-7 badge please!

name this thing the RX-9 dammit!

Timpo 11-25-2009 09:54 AM

DO NOT WANT!!!

I'd rather take an FD please...also RX-7 and GT-R are historically considered as rivals, at least in Japan.

Can that thing match up with GT-R's performance? I doubt it.

unit 11-25-2009 12:29 PM

im surprised they didnt decide to make this an expensive supercar like the japanese have recently been doing

SpuGen 11-25-2009 12:34 PM

I like it.

Looks like it takes styling cues from the SA22 rear and FD3S front.
