i can't :cry: .... i always say it's not me that hates the car, instead it's the car that hates me. i've gone back to the dealer 7 times in the last 2 years of ownership, and the last time i was there it took 3 weeks for it to be fixed (no parts). i barely have 10k kms on it.

- broken sun visor (day 1 of ownership)(warranty)
- broken lumbar support (ditto)(warranty)
- front wiper arms missing parts(!)(warranty)
- steering ecu fail(warrantyX2)
- alarm system intermittent fail (just because the LED is blinking dosen't mean it's on apparently)(dosen't act up when i go to dealer... figures :rolleyes: )
- a/c compressor fail (warranty)
- front subframe bolts fail (warranty)
- mystery CEL that didn't stay on long enough to vagcom a code from (may you never come back...)
- 1 quart of oil ever 5-6k kms (supposed to be considered "normal" :eek: )
- bloody rattle in the passenger door that just won't go away (please go away....)

granted, these issues are considered to be "minor"... my fuel pump follower hasn't disintegrated and eaten my camshaft, my engine hasn't been rebuilt/replaced because of bad rings, the DSG transmission hasn't blown up or given me the PRNDL flash of death, etc... am i complaining too much? my last car was an old 10 year old toyota product that had 140k kms on the clock when i had to let it go, and it only went back to the dealer once for warranty work (valve cover gaskets) in the 5 years that i had it. whenever i go to the vw service dept. it's like a madhouse there... there could be as many as 3-5 service advisors working the counters with owners sometimes lining up like a weekend at costco. when i was with toyota the service dept. was like a ghost town with only one single advisor at the counter who can barely stay awake because there was nothing to do.

having said this, i'm just glad there is a good service advisor at the dealer i go to (clarkdale). if it weren't for him giving me no warranty grief like the horror stories i've heard of with other dealers, i wouldn't have stuck it out for this long... but after the warranty expires, who knows???

my friends mock me saying that i bought a gti so that i can drive a jetta service rental with a mystery stain in the back seat all the time :o

however... i haven't had any problems in the last 4 months, so i'm becoming optimistic again. pray for me everyone! :thumbsup:

where is princeallure? i know he's out there... his gti is a model of perfection... over 60k kms and only the clutch blew up on it, and that's it. and now he's selling it... personally i think he should get it bronzed or sth :rolleyes:

haulin_oats had zero problems with his gti as well before he sold it... i think he only had one CEL resulting from a bad aftermarket air intake install.

time to trade in that VW and get yourself a Honda or Toyota.

and i thought with all of VW's part sharing that they could make something work properly for longer than 2 days

i've been in hondas for almost a decade... no more thanks. too tired of seeing myself at every streetlight, getting stolen/stupid high insurance rates, and damn ricers/haters :rolleyes:

as for toyota... nothing in their current lineup interests me. i'm hoping my gti will hold together long enough for the FT86 to come out.

^ Even the salesman says get it from the 2farms (Chinese call them "雙田" coz the kanji for both honda and toyota, or rather, toyoda are "田" for farms)

And for you who don't want to buy one that's because your first concern is not "reliability" but rather "style" or "enjoyment". For the OP he just hates it when his DD fails on him so the only logical outcome is the 2farms. Your opinion doesn't matter anyway maybe you like to fix cars? The OP doesn't want to touch a wrench if he doesn't have to so we all say....it's 2farms time.

I have said it before and I'll say that again, keep a Euro VAG car for joy and pleasure good, use it for DD you are testing your luck.

tired of seeing yourself at every streetlight? Not too clear on what that means but the newer stuff doesn't get stolen as much as the old school eg's and ek's. They all come with immobilizer now and the ricer theme is just about gone now. Although there are still a few out there. OP wants a reliable car and I suggested the 2 most reliable. Instead of bashing honda/toyota, what do you suggest the OP gets?

He means that there are so many Hondas out there that it takes all uniqueness away from driving one.

I gotta give honda credit, at least for my old civic they sure designed a car to be easy to work on.

I've helped a friend work on his VW, and I remember scratching my head thinking "Why the fuck would they have designed that part that way?"

What generation GTi's do you guys own ? Jesus christ I was so excited for the new MK6 and Golf-R if it ever came !

I have had my fair share of problems... but my car is also modified like most of the people on here... with modifications come problems and thats just the name of the game...

Overall I am very happy with my car and it runs amazingly well... currently butting about 350hp through the engine and will start spraying meth and have an updated tune and will be pushing for 450whp...

As much as i want a new car I still enjoy my car and anything else in the same price range really doesn't have the same feel or finish that a VW does... I love VW but want a RWD or AWD car next so I am looking at something else but for now... I have a VW and its a great car!

And if you are modifying... checking the cam follower and all the other parts that are known to fail is just part of regular maintenance... :thumbsup:

alot of the engine mishaps from bad design were fixed in the MK6

depends on which car i guess. 'japanese cars' are not necessarily reliable, some are, some arent. i've also known lots of friends who have had tons of problems with vdubs (more problems than i've ever had with any of my (or my family's) japanese cars). my friend had 2 golfs that had tons of problems (mk3, mk4) and my coworkers 97 jetta seems like its always in the shop, and he's babied it since it was brand new.

Admittedly they're older JDM cars (Nissan s12, 2x Mazda MX6 LS, and a 7g Honda Accord coupe), but even when compared to my also admittedly older VW's, it's a tossup as to which were less reliable. I know newer cars are supposed to be much more "reliable" but even comparing known issues of VW's to those of, say, Toyota, there isn't much in the way of saying which one comes up on top. Sure, Volkswagen may have more TSB's listed, but I know of plenty of Toyota owners of new cars that all have the same issues, but Toyota still wont release a recall for 'em.

Besides, I've yet to drive a modern Toyota or Honda that feels like it has any sort of character to it. With the exception of the S2K, they all feel far too sterilized. It's one reason why many people are willing to pick another car brand that's allegedly less reliable, but promises a much more exciting driving experience.

You drive a VAG and then you are suprised when it gives you problems?

learn how to do routine check ups on your car, and it won't die on you next time you want to eat chinese food

switch to a lancia and then back to a vw.
