this thread is win.. have u even checked your cam follower or cam? u're suppose to check every 10000 km. Also, a aftermarket HPFP wears your cams faster than stock FYI

Is this a VW requirement?

10000km is almost every oil change. Sounds pretty rediculous to me that VW would have someone unbolt a semi-major part of their motor every oil change. Then again, this is VW we're talking about..

the turbo engine in the GTI is a direct-injection setup, hence the need for a high-pressure fuel pump. because it's under so much load (120bar), and the stupid follower is a bucket design, the bucket becomes prone to premature wear and can fail before the recommended service/inspection intervals depending on oil/usage. as a result the plunger will hole the bucket and eat the cam lobe... you get the idea.

and it dosen't matter if the pump is stock or aftermarket... both will fail.

the new TSI engine dosen't use the bucket design anymore. vw changed it to a rollower bearing follower... and of course it's not something that can be retrofitted to us FSI owners

there is a company in ontario called H2sport that has designed a roller bearing follower for the FSI (after one of their sponsored cars blew up at the car and driver one lap of america event this year), but it's still going through R&D until they are 110% sure it will not fail... but it's been over a half-year now and still not ready

I know how direct injection engines work. I was wondering if pulling the HP pump every 10k is a VW service requirement on the car. If it is, that's pretty stupid.

no it wasn't supposed to be, but it is now

thankfully it's not a major job. it took 20 minutes for mine to be replaced. but pulling the cam out replace after the pump munched the end off of it, and having to poke around inside the engine to find whatever is left of the bucket follower... very major

this is the TSB for audi from apr, but it's the same for VW:

If you don't like to fiddle with your car and you bought a VW......May God help you.

If you like to "drive" a car and not "fix" a car, then buy a TSX or something.

I love our VW, but lately it's been a bitch - then again it has a 1.8T so it's a finicky engine anyways.

why is it that only the negative stuff gets pointed out?

we need someone with good experience with VW to say a few things in this thread.

had the GTI for 7.5K km and only have good experiences...is my daily driver, have alot of fun driving it (by fun i dont mean driving like a douche bag weaving in and out of traffic cutting ppl off and speeding). haven't had a problem with the car so far and pretty sure it will stay this way, car still drives like new!

if i were to complain about one thing (which is my fault) is the steering does rebound a bit on account of the H&R springs i had put in without coilovers ^^"

im sure ppl who are complaining about VW just got the unlucky few even great car companies (like VW) have a few...excuse the cliche...rotten eggs...those of you suggesting alternative markets (such as japanese or US) im positive they have a few bugs too!

And you expect a 20 year old car not to have any problems?

i did but not to that extent. I loved that car to death but the maintainance was hurting me too much financially. I had a 88 crx,90 EK si and a 91 240sx with the same clicks that game me less of a headache. Its just from my experience.
maybe its just me but i hear too much stories of VWs being unreliable.

Was that yours? If so, I think I must have met you at one of the DOV/Dubberz meets... If not, there's one running around locally that looked the exact same.

I'll admit that there are a few VW's out there that definitely had a larger than normal amount of issues (MK3's auto tranny's, B3 Passat's entire electrical system, MK4's VR6 coilpack, etc), but as a whole -- and presuming the cars are maintained properly -- they're just as (un)reliable as any other car out there.

love my 2002 gti 337 (admittedly with low mileage - 70k+). love the 1.8t engine. at least it isn't a vr6. *runs and hides*

quality of manufacture. solidness of car. low down punch of the 1.8t. 1.8t easily chipped for greater power. love it.

no qualms about owning another VW (like a mk5 5dr gti with DSG *dreams*).
