Toyota makes some great cars that will last pretty much forever.

A reliable car imo is a good car, but it just doesn't fit into the category of great. Thats like saying a piece of granite is great because it lasts forever.

Variable Valve Timing doesn't belong to Honda. That claim to fame goes to Nissan since they were the first company to use an electronic version of it. Alfa was the first to use it mechanically. But that's engineering greatness, which doesn't really fall under the scope of "great cars."

The NSX I'll give you since it was more or less the first "common man's" supercar.

The people who've mentioned Toyota have no idea what they're talking about - this thread is not about the car company with the most boring cars.

asahai69 11-28-2009 09:17 PM

they didnt get to #1 by making shit vehicles

skyxx 11-28-2009 09:20 PM

^ They got to #1 by making "Reliable" vehicles that were economical. Basically Brand power and no one said they were shit cars, just that not a lot of them were "Great" cars.

jeff_alexander 11-28-2009 09:26 PM

Volkswagen called, says they want to be recognized as the worlds largest automotive manufacturer.

crazyazn 11-28-2009 09:58 PM

Dacia...duhhh

boostfever 11-28-2009 11:07 PM

BMW135i 11-29-2009 02:13 AM

Nissan

Ford_Fanatic 11-29-2009 11:28 AM

The OP could have made his definition of "great" a little more clear. There are great cars and then there are cars destined for greatness.

The Honda Accord's a great car. Cheap, reliable, good on gas, decent performance and decent luxury. But is that what the OP was talking about when he said great.

The Ford GT-40, who trounced on Ferraris at Lemans, was no doubt loud, rickety and not one bit refined. But that car was destined for greatness from the start.

So this question can't be answered until the OP defines what "great" means.

Lancia

!SG 11-29-2009 02:44 PM

the topic is too vague, as vague as our exhaust laws.

what do you define as a great car? even if u were to specify it as performance, this doesnt help much?

is it great as most desired? still found on the road? greatest heritage? greatest development from track to street?

vexor 11-29-2009 03:54 PM

Lancia.... to be honest never saw that coming

jeff_alexander 11-29-2009 04:26 PM

Dacia Sandero

Wykydtron 11-29-2009 04:40 PM

Very true, great needs to be more defined. Also, everyone needs to stop posting one word answeres like "nissan" without trying to explain why. Why are they great? What cars, what reasons? Anything of substance.

twitchyzero 11-29-2009 04:59 PM

Chrysler's original jeep in WWII

notching 11-29-2009 05:36 PM

I can't believe no one said jag.

Synapz 11-29-2009 06:49 PM

And after all the "Honda this" and "Toyota that", not 1 japanese manufacturer is on that board.

skyxx 11-29-2009 06:53 PM

^ Cause they didn't make enough "Great" cars but made alot of "Reliable" cars.

jeff_alexander 11-29-2009 08:04 PM

That was a truly beautiful Top Gear Segment. RWD > Audi Quattro in rallying? Where is your god now Audi Fanbois?

I agree it sorta depends on how you define "great" - but all in all I'd say Ford as well.

I have 3 volvo's, but it definitely ain't volvo.

They only ever sold diesel cars from ~1980-1989, and it was a horrible, horrible bastardized VW motor. They are almost all dead now. The diesel they have now is nice but not sold in North America.

The horrible french V6 they offered as their only 6 cylinder engine from ~1978-1991 is another terrible, terrible motor as employed by Volvo.

They've made some good cars but highest number of great cars? What? Smoke crack much?

wahyinghung 11-29-2009 10:33 PM

I would say both bimmer and vdub
