Slingbox Question

Does anyone know how exactly the slingbox work?

I have rogers/shaw cable TV for my family home, but no TV service for another condo I owned.
Would I be able to watch TV in the condo with the slingbox? How does the control work? I.e. can i change channel or watch different channels from what is being viewed at home simultaneously?

And what about picture quality and bandwidth?

I am looking at this particular unit on sale-> http://accessories.dell.com/sna/prod...1&sku=A2239601

I actually have never used one yet but the theory behind this is that you put the slingbox in the place where there is TV and then you can hook up to it via the internet to use it to stream your TV signal ... so you'll need an internet connection at your other condo and use a computer or a media centre connected to a TV to watch ... I don't know about the quality of the stream but I heard that even though you have an HD input that it only streams SD but someone's going to need to confirm that ...

The controls work well I heard and it does work if you have a good connections ... I'm actually trying to see if a slingbox will stream to my cell phone thru 3G properly but I haven't gotten around to experimenting with it yet ...

You might want to do some quick research on the subject cause isn't that a 1 day sale from Dell that ends today ... it is a decent price for a slingbox and with free shipping ...

I own a slingbox.
I use it to watch when im on the road.

You can control the channels remotely.
And yes, people at home will watch what you are watching remotely.

If ur watching what u see at home then you hooked it up wrong.

Op: I got this same model, and shaw at home as Well. I hook up the tv antenna cable (coax) to it and it has a built in tv tuner. You also need a high speed internet connection for it. Once u have it hooked up right and running. You use the which ever device you want. For me I use my blackberry on 3G or wifi and I connect to the home slingbox and u can view remotely as Well as change channels.

The model that ur looking at is the pro-hd which gives you hd feature to stream. However you will need the shaw hi-deft box for the slingbox if u were to do that. Generally I wouldn't bother as streaming hd takes a lot of bandwidth and it won't be the greatest.

As for quality its pretty good, surpasses youtube quality when watching it on my phone or computer.

I recommend it to a lot of my friends and they all love it.

Nope. Didnt hook it up wrong. I just dont have a built in Tuner on mine. I have one of the second generation basic model. One of the older models.
Didnt realize the tuner models allow you to simultaneously watch different channels. Pretty cool.
