She's using her sister's old Norco Wolverine haha just a mountain bike. I think we'll be riding on trails more often than not. She's not ready for a road bike.

Man, watching all these bikers out in the sun makes me want to get one. Anyone have any recommendations on what to get. It seems like there are quite a few riders here that know a lot about biking. A little too technical for me, but I guess this is the right place to ask.
I am looking for an all around bike? I was reading a bit online and seems like a hybrid bike is the way to go, but then i asked a friend and he told me they are for old people? He then said to just get a mountain bike instead and I was like WTF?
Anyways, I am 5'9. 180 pounds (if that even matters). Any suggestions? Or things I should look for when picking up a bike? I am considering a used one since it will be my first bike. Suggestions?

I think a better question to ask yourself is: What kind of cycling do you want to do?
There are different types of cycling. Road, commuting, casual/leisure (Seawall type) trails/mountain biking etc.
Figure that out first and then maybe we can help you. For what its worth - hybrids are for everybody. Not just old people. All-round bikes usually end up being hybrids because they have somewhat of a performance ability while allowing the rider to keep things casual and to commute.

Suggestions? | My suggestion is...buy my bike! I have an old GT Mountain bike that I'm looking to sell. I'll throw in a pair of brand new slicks, then you can commute on it if you like.

Just sold my Kona Hahanna. I kind of regret it now after seeing hypa's bike. 
However, I replaced it with a road bike!

* I know the seat post is high. It's not where it is going to end up. It's carbon, and I didn't want to scratch it up just yet!

Quite the overkill if you're just going around Stanley Park or down the block, no? Personally, I would just start with an older hardtail, or even full rigid, mountain bike. At least then, you can go through some of the trails in Stanley Park if you choose to. Or, if you decide you want to stick to the seawall, then swap out the knobby tires for some slicks.
There's plenty of decent older mountain bikes on Craigslist. Or buy my GT Palomar!! (Sorry, just had to plug my bike)
