For those who do make it through 1st and 2nd year though, out of my friends (and myself), they find that they do better in their 3rd and 4th years because they know the amount of work they need to put in (that doesn't mean they get 100% and stuff, but they don't totally bomb some assignments/midterms like they did in first year.. which im sure a lot of us did). | I graduated out of OAC (Grade 13) in Ontario and found first year university to be a lot of repetition of OAC and very easy to get As without a lot of studying.
OAC has been removed in Ontario, and many other provinces don't have grade 13 either, so that might explain why 1st year is such a failure for many.
My other explanation is that I'm a small town country boy, had a beer in my hand when I was 8, first strip club when I was 15, regularly bar hopping when I was 17. By the time university came I'd already mastered the ability to party hard and get good grades in high school. Its a skill that takes many beers to learn.

Some people can't wait to be finished school. But once they're done, they want to go back to school.
As for myself, I don't miss school or exams whatsoever.

- Print your material and get away from the computer. You'll learn more without distraction, and retain more. | Do you mind pointing me to the source that says we retain more knowledge reading from a printed paper?
I have a very low concentration level, especially when I'm on the computer (ie. like now). But sometimes, the notes are online and I don't want to waste paper to print it out.
Side note, any tips on how to study, or specifically, methods? For me, I just read my notes 3-4 times, and it somewhat works.

I'm going through each chapter that will be tested, and writing and re-writing important sections and notes that I believe will be on the test. After writing those notes, I read the summary of each chapter along with the notes that I had just recently typed.
Then, I go through the study questions and try to answer them utilizing my notes and textbook as my final preparation before the exam.
.....I still end up with a shitty mark

Recent research has found that reading a longer text on paper is 25% faster than reading the same text on a computer screen. At the same time, reading comprehension and article overview are improved.
Readers of text on paper typically concentrate fully on what they're doing, while readers of screen content are either hard at work fighting off distractions or have resigned to giving the text only cursory attention.
| Forget the "wasting paper" argument the environmental hippies have driven into us. Trees regrow, as long as the paper comes from a sustainable forest (Forest Stewardship Council logo), we'll always have more paper. If you still feel bad then at least recycle it.
I always print and read. I've tried reading eBooks on my tablet PC and note: eye strain make sit uncomfortable after awhile, and I'm almost always distracted and surf the web.

Also use the 80/20 rule. Its far better to spend time studying 80% of the material you know well, than time trying to learn the last 20% which might be too difficult or beyond your comprehension (everyone does have limits). | tell me: i forget
show me: i remember
involve me: i understand

^You will probably fail that exam regardless because you're dumb enough to trust the weathernetwork for weather. http://www.weatheroffice.gc.ca/city/..._metric_e.html
