Tony Parsons leaves Global BC...

VANCOUVER — Global News anchorman Tony Parsons is set to leave the country's top-rated supper hour newscast.

"Tomorrow night is my last News Hour," Parsons confirmed Tuesday evening on the popular B.C. show.

The well-known broadcaster has anchored the evening news program for 34 years.

But neither Parsons nor Global BC vice-president Brett Manlove would confirm rumours that Parsons is leaving to become an anchor at CHEK News in Victoria in March.

"Although Tony is leaving the News Hour, he has indicated that he would like to remain part of the B.C. broadcasting community after his winter break," Manlove said in a news release. "We are talking to Tony about several options. However, there is nothing specific to announce at this time."

Parsons described his departure from News Hour as "bittersweet."

"I know it is the right decision for the station and for me," he said in a news release.

Parsons was initially expected to remain on the air as a part-time anchor through the end of February and the 2010 Olympic Games.

He had reduced his workload this year to just two telecasts a week and previously said he planned to retire in March to make documentary films.

CHEK news director John Pollard did not directly deny that the employee-owned station had landed B.C.'s best-known broadcaster, though he did say that Parsons has no ownership stake in the station.

Parsons joined Global — then BCTV — in the early 1970s.

Encouraged by a high school teacher who admired his reading voice, Parsons enrolled in Ryerson University's then-fledgling radio and television arts program in Toronto and then dropped out, an experience he calls a "disaster."

Parsons talked himself into a string of on-air jobs at radio stations before landing a rock n' roll disc jockey gig in Guelph, Ont. It was a short-lived assignment as the young Parsons could never muster enough fake joy to satisfy the station manager or the listeners.

"I didn't enjoy it, and listeners soon tired of me, believe me," he said. "I was never a DJ kind of guy."

He took one more job spinning records in Hamilton, but soon marched down to the news director's office to ask if he could have a stab at the news.

He never looked back. His vagabond career took him to Toronto and then to Vancouver.

Parsons has just released a memoir of his 50-year career, titled A Life in the News.

Global National anchor Kevin Newman described Parsons as "an icon in B.C."

"I think it's important we mark the fact that an era is turning," he said.

"Guys like him are probably never going to be seen again — people who have that kind of longevity or that kind of trust with viewers."

This Wednesday, Dec. 16, 2009 at 6 p.m., Tony Parsons will anchor the News Hour on Global BC for the last time.
I wonder what made him leave all of a sudden.

Also, I'd like to point out the name of Global BC's Vice-President... read again if you skimmed the article. That's some name, eh?

Moving to CHEK?!?!?! Thats huge for the the Island and the station. A few months ago it was going to close down and now they will have Tony Parsons!!!

JordanLee 12-16-2009 12:43 AM

I remember on some special edition of the news or sth Tony was explaining this story how he was at Earls for lunch and had this crazy fan come up to him. He asked to shake his hand and asked for an autograph. When all was said and done the guy goes "It was a pleasure meeting you Mr Quinn". And Tony was like pissed off lol. Back in the day when I only watched BCTV as a kid, I thought Tony Parsons and Patt Quinn were the same person....

JSALES 12-16-2009 12:52 AM

too bad i wasn't around to watch the news at 6

StylinRed 12-16-2009 01:31 AM

watched him and Lloyd Robertson all the time since i was a kid

i preferred BCTV to GlobalBC though (actually h8 global)

Glad he's moving but too bad its to Chek oO i imagined something like CBC or even CTV

ahh good times with the news

Great68 12-16-2009 05:58 AM

I saw him eating at Earls in Lansdowne mall of all places. I'm pretty stoked he's coming to the island, maybe now I'll actually watch the local news, the current anchors of chek and a channel are so bloody boring.

EmOne 12-16-2009 06:01 AM

Yep.

What are all the old ladies gonna do? They adored the guy. Even my mom who can't understand English that well, likes the guy (better than Ian Handsome Man Thing).

I used to think Pamela Martin was hot back then. Those two were great together (Pamela and Tony). Now Pamela is held together with super glue.

spoon.ek9 12-16-2009 02:26 PM

they were saying on the radio that he was unhappy with his airtime being cut down to 2 days with his eventual retirement looming. he instead opted to quit on his own terms, good for him.

I think Keri Adams is quite pretty. Her eyes are so beautiful! Too bad she's on mat leave right now so we don't get to see her.

skyxx 12-16-2009 02:40 PM

He's leaving...damn. I'm still amazed at how he can talk without moving or opening his mouth! NO JOKE!

MR_BIGGS 12-16-2009 02:46 PM

In terms of production, CTV seems to have all the bells and whistles, but Global has good people (i.e. Chris Gailus) Tony Parsons will be missed, he is 70 years old, good on him.

Ch28 12-16-2009 03:33 PM

It's all about Robin Stickley...she's the one that does the news on the weekends for Global
