Is the 15" Macbook Pro worth the extra money over a good PC Laptop?
 

I am looking to get a Laptop which will be used primarily for school, but I will also be making it my home computer as well. I am not a computer addict, but I like to download movies, songs, and watch Sporting events online.

I am looking to be using this computer for at least the next 4 years, and I have heard nothing but positive reviews from my friends who have Mac Laptops, but I am curious as to if the extra money it would cost me with the Mac over a PC would be worth it in the long run.

Any advice would be appreciated.

You don't need a 15" macbook pro, if anything just get the white on.

But your better of getting a pc, and this is from a mmac user

Don't get a netbook if this is going to be your primary home laptop. Just get a decent pc laptop.

lol, why would you spend money on a MAC for a much slower comp? same amount of money can get you much more bang for your dollar. If you want to look like a yale town yuppy holding a $5 coffee trying to pick up ladies at a local coffee stand. Ya, then my all means spend the cash for a mac. But, seriously online you can find TONS of reasons why not to get a MAC.

The OSX system is a love or hate thing. If you are putting the fact that money is no issue, then by all means do it

by far tho, the screen is beautiful.
I must say tho, my 15in macbookpro is 3.5yrs old, and its still kicking strong, i can run l4d2 on it no problem

For a bit more constructive criticism. This is a better laptop than a 15" MBP for a few hundred dollars less. I plan to get this laptop in a couple months.

For the price of a Mac Book Pro, you could buy two laptops, you don't need any serious hardware... so buy one now and then in two years, then you'll have two laptops! Hell, you can get a PC and a laptop too if you wanted...

Love my Macbook Pro. I never had a PC laptop that worked properly from top to bottom.

That being said, I hate the idea of not being able to replace the battery on my own and being able to bring two batteries.

If all your buddies have Macs, and you're not very computer savvy, stick with a Mac. At least you'll have some friends who can help you out when you have problems.

If it were up to me, I'd spend the money I would have spent on a Mac on a decent PC. I don't think you can go wrong with either one though. It's really just a matter of preference (and the willingness to part with a few more bucks on a Mac)

Not gonna lie, I love my mac, but I find myself using my laptop alot more now.
My mac is only really used for dl'ing music, movies, editing pics and charging my ipod.

Everything else I find is much more enjoyable on my notebook (maybe cause its ALOT more powerful than my mac mini)
Macs are expensive, thats all i gotta say

i also need to get a mac book pro for school soon(recommended by school/teacher). we do have an option of getting a pc though. after what i've read here, im having second thoughts haha

I agree for what the OP does a netbook would be great.

however as much of a pc fanboy I am, have to disagree with all these people linking Core i7 laptops.

The most VALUABLE component to any laptop is BATTERY LIFE, that asus would be like 2hours of battery.

The macbooks have pretty good batteries that will last 7+ hours, that don't protrude out of the chassis. Very few PC's can match that, which is why netbooks are so great.

PORTABLE + BATTERY LIFE = GREAT NOTEBOOK (netbooks (culv or atom) and macbooks both offer this in spades)

gaming and performance "notebooks" are utterly useless for what their meant to be which is portable.

Asus UL series FTW

shit the asus UL series look amazing. What are the drawbacks of rthe SU processor compared to a T or P? just a bit slower? How are they for photo editing/light gaming (wow) compared to the T and P?

Buy it if you think it's worth it. Don't even bother asking on RS. It's just going to end up in a big argument just like the Evo vs sti thread.

get a laptop and install ubuntu. Been playing with this OS for a couple days now and i'm quite impressed with the performance and speed of the operating system. And with what you said in your post about what you do with a computer. I think is worth it. Doesn't take a uber laptop to run this os.

SU processors are the ultra low-voltage line of processors from Intel. Less power, less performance. About 3x faster than the Atom, and 2/3 the power & 1/3 the power of the T series (P series uses slightly less power than the T).

I can run Photoshop/InDesign CS4 on my UL20A perfectly fine. A little slow at times, but CULV laptops aren't meant to be powerhorses anyways. I can also run WoW on my Asus UL20A with my C2D SU7300 @ 1.3GHZ and 4500MHD fine on low settings/max resolution of 1366x768.

If you want a little bit more power, I'd recommend the VT line of the UL series as they include the turbo33 function and dedicated/switchable graphics. turbo33 = overclock the processor's FSB by 33%, and dedicated graphics = NVIDIA G210M.

If your looking for a laptop for the next 4 years and you have the budget, by all means I would suggest a Mac. Highly recommend it.

If your tight with the budget, get a Win7 Laptop. Don't get a netbook, screen size might be too small for watching sporting events. Also, they are not good when you run a lot of apps at the same time.

I've owned both Windows and Mac laptops and I am saying this based on my personal opinion only.
