STI vs Evo: Which is the better car?

Inspired by the sti/snow thread, an original Revscene debate.

Which is the better car: Evo or STI, and why?

Dig deep! Let's see some rally videos and discussion of heritage, discussion of strength of internals, and pictures of prime examples!

this topic will not end

watch top gear clarckson already did this. said the Evo was much better and he thought it was faster but in the end the STI had a faster lap. But he liked the evo hands down

Let me predict what will happen, RS'ers will have a heated debate as to which is better, this thread will have 9 pages, a troll will come in and this will end up in Fight Club.

Much like the F430, C63 photoshoot thread.

what year of EVO and what year of the STI are you comparing?

Mugen EvOlutioN 12-21-2009 09:16 AM

EVO > STi

yes a bit more specific on year would make different arguments

but the general consensus is:
engine: EVO > STI
drivetrain: EVO > STI
Exterior: STI > EVO
Interior: STI > EVO

so in a nut shell, mechanically EVO is better, ergonomics wise, STI is better

deep inside me is a EVO fan

I wonder which one has higher sales-figures in 2009?

triplexcel 12-21-2009 12:44 PM

^probably the sti because its cheaper by 10k.

One of the many reasons why I like subaru's is the boxer rumble and it seems to catch more attention than all of the cars in its class.

Apparently subaru's are more reliable than mitsu's, but mitsu's respond better to mods.

EVO all the way.

J-Chow 12-21-2009 01:03 PM

I love subaru's boxer engine and the distinct rumble, but the steering feels like i'm driving a boat.

But in the end,

I still want an EVO 5,6,7,8, or 9 lol.

EVO 9 > STI 07 > EVO X > STI 2010

This is VERY close to what I have in mind too.

EVO 9 > STI 04 > EVO X > STI 2010

hotong 12-21-2009 06:19 PM

although i really like STIs.. i think evo is the better car.

Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution 6 Tommi Makinen Edition (AKA 6.5) > All

Drove one of these in Seattle (and kicking myself for not buying it), and it was literally the best AWD turbo monster I've ever driven - even compared to most modern sports cars (GTR, Porsche, etc).

The argument of which car is better also depends on the generation, but for the most part I find that Evolutions have a slight edge over the Impreza's.

fishing666 12-21-2009 07:02 PM

lan evo x is much better

mpr 12-21-2009 07:09 PM

I would also say the evo x slightly edges the Sti's competition.

Cornering Evo > Sti
Int/Ext Evo > Sti
Power (torque) Sti > Evo
Brakes Evo > Sti
Price Sti > Evo

Overall. Evo X wins.

Jackygor 12-21-2009 07:10 PM

it is highly dependent on the generation and your priorities...both manufacturer try to differentiate a little in order not to compete too head on...i guess that is why sti went with hatch while evo stayed with sedan.

I failed you, you should have talked to me personally LOL

TOPEC 12-21-2009 08:49 PM

one of the reasons why the evo > sti in handling is the ability to shift power side to side, check out this beefy ayc rear diff from an evo

Not a fan of the transmission in the EVO X MR, its a little annoying in the city when you need to just crawl, Like the STi's 6 speed better. Also a fan of the 5 door shape, front end could afford to be a bit more aggressive though, but with some minor suspension upgrades the STi would probably handle as well as the EVO, it's also a much lighter car which is always good stuff :D

I prefer the Evo's styling though inside and out.

For everyday use STi would be my pick, its also a cheaper car.
GSR evo for the track and second car
