An interesting video tour of the 2nd largest mall in the world that has been abandoned:

New South China Mall

New South China Mall (simplified Chinese: 华南MALL; pinyin: Huánán MALL) (formerly South China Mall) in Dongguan, China is the second largest mall in the world after Dubai Mall. It has the most gross leasable area of any mall in the world;[1] room for over 1,500 stores in approximately 7.1 million square feet (659,612 square metres) of leasable space[1] and 890.000 square metres of total area.

The mall has seven zones modeled on international cities, nations and regions, including Amsterdam, Paris, Rome, Venice, Egypt, the Caribbean, and California.

Since its opening in 2005, it has suffered from a severe lack of occupants. Much of the retail space remained empty in 2008, with 99.2 percent of the stores vacant.[2] Many analysts[who?] said that the main reason the mall had been largely unoccupied was its location in the suburbs of Dongguan, which means that it was only practical to travel there using a car. The only occupied areas are near the entrance where several Western fast food chains are located and a parking structure repurposed as a kart racing track.

The planned Shangri-La Hotel has not been constructed.

The mall's name has been New South China Mall since 2009.[3]
Here is an additional article on the mall: http://www.thenational.ae/article/20...206990272/1042

This topic facinates me since it reminds me of landsdowne mall in richmond (despite the fact that it is not a total failure).

As the mall was about to open, one of its design consultants, Ian Thomas of the Thomas Consulting Group in Vancouver, told the trade publication Shopping Centers Today that the zones were “done with such authenticity, with such great attention to detail, that you really think you’re in the real thing.”

The Arc de Triomphe that stands in the very middle of the South China Mall – one of the first things I saw upon arrival – bears eleven circular seals engraved with the name of the city that meant so much suffering for Napoleon’s army: “MOCSOW”. It takes a minute to figure out that the seals have been affixed upside-down.

Has lansdown been a little bit more busy now that there's the new skytrain next to it? I remember it was pretty empty back in the days when I went to Kwantlen.

the bigbox stores saved landsdowne

Not the mall. People just go to FS & BB but not venture INTO the mall

One of the reasons I believe is because Landsdowne is too white. The shops in Landsdowne don't really cater to the c-lai class. It's more of a white ppl mall. In contrast, Aberdeen/Parker are like 100% authentic Hong Kong style mall. They all sell the same shit: gold/jewellery, random jap brand clothes, and food. Even tho parking is a bitch, people insist on going there. If you just look at the Triple-O in the food court u'll see wut I mean. Business is few & far between. U can't be white in a yellow town.

richmond center is more or less te same

Weird, I go to Dong Guan all the time, and have never seen the world's 2nd biggest mall, or even knew of its existence!

oh really? i missed it i guess cuz i never had interest of going into the mall haha.

But that dong guan mall is major fail. I imagine the initial investors for that place has some major dough, but with all that money you'd expect them to have better judgement in such a big investment in such a horrible location...

slammer111 12-23-2009 02:55 AM

China is freaking awesome. Malls with 0 customers are a dime a dozen, especially in the GZ area.

It's really weird there, and for the life of me I don't know how certain places survive when you literally see 0 customers in the entire mall. It looks perfectly like a regular mall except with 0 customers.

On a smaller scale, Bridgepoint (since torn down and replaced with River Rock) and Tinseltown come to mind. At least Tinseltown is ever so slowly starting to pick up, even though it's only taken a few years (and by years I mean decade). :lol
