| Dilemma between work and fun
I'm stuck between two choices: work or snowboard trip. Here is my situation:
Recently, I've promised my ex-employer that I will help them out with the Boxing Sales. My schedule with them is to work only on the 26, 27, and 28th. This ex-part-time job is meaningless to me; however, I might want to ask them to be my reference for my future professional career after I finished school.
Yesterday, my older cousins asked me if I wanted to join them on their snowboard trip. They are leaving on the afternoon of the 28th and will be back to Vancouver by the 30th. I actually promised them right away since it would be a free trip for me. Snowboarding is my favorite winter activity, and this is literally free money. This is what I've done so far:
- promised my ex-employer that I will help them out with 3 days
- promised my cousins that I will join them for snowboarding
- left a voicemail for my ex-employer and told them that I can only work on the morning of the 28th
- waiter for a response from my ex-employer, but nothing so far
- posted on RS
So what should I do now?
Call in sick on that day even though I left a voicemail already?
Call them again and see if they got my voicemail?
Turn down my cousins?
Screw the job and reference, since it's a meaningless position job?
etc.
etc.
etc.
What would YOU do if you were me?

It doesn't matter what the job means to you. What matters is whether or not you are a man of your word.
If you can call in sick and not feel bad about it for greatly letting someone down who was depending on you, well... Have a nice life |

Dilemma between work and fun?? FUN of course, this ain't no dilemma!
if the ex part is meaningless to you then call in sick, this isn't going to change their impression of you. why not just work on the 26th and 27th, since you're leaving on the 28th. you can still use them as a reference, they aren't going to be all uptight because you were sick on the days you promised to work. you were sick.
anyways, nice job with all the promises.

I am still working on the 26th and the 27th. Just that for the 28th, I want to take the second half of the day off.
I'm not sure if 3 days is enough for a notice to take half of the 28th off.
yea.. I know I screwed up, so now I need a quick way of unscrewing things.

Hence I posted this on RS to see what you guys think I should do. Well I think I can still work at most half of my shift on the 28th if I do decide to go snowboard afterwards. I'm scheduled to work 11hrs (including breaks) on that day, so half of my shift would still come close to 5hrs of work.
Don't know what to do anymore. If I do work for that one day, I'll loss 2.5 days of fun. But it wouldn't be much fun snowboarding knowing I let down my ex-employer.

yea.. I know I screwed up, so now I need a quick way of unscrewing things. | it looks ugly if you take half the day off on the 28th imo, unless it was for a valid reason like doctors, school or something then it would be fine. i would just call in sick on the 28th. that way you don't really have to do any advance notice, because you're sick right? no one plans to be sick, it just happens.
just make sure not to post any snowboard related shit on your facebook if you have your employer as a friend. lol
OT but fuck insomniac! fuck fuck fuck !!!

actually I won't feel THAT bad if I do call in sick since I originally promised to work on the 27th ONLY! However when I went in to the office to sign some papers, they scheduled me for the 26th and the 28th as well. I should've said no on that day, but I've always sucked at rejecting ppl on the spot.
... but they do prove to be good reference since this would be the last job that I worked before entering a job at a professional level.

go in on the 26th and tell them u want the afternoon off on the 28. some plans came up. they should be glad that you are helping them out on the 26/27.
like "the pup" said , its about your character. especially, if you are using them as a reference.
if i were you - that is what i'd do. i'd call them until you have confirmation they got the message.

But what if they say it's too late to get half of the 28th off? What should I do that this point if it happens? I'll call them at 12 today when I go to work. It might be a bit too early. LOL

Why don't you go there and ask in person rather than leave a bunch of messages and wait?

Also, I don't work in the office. Even before when I was working part-time, I see my boss in person once every 2 weeks to 4 weeks.
anyways.. problem has been solved.
Apparently they got my first voicemail but didn't bother calling me back.
Today, I called in again and they told me they will try and work something out for me.

btw just so that no one stereotypes me, I've never faked a "call in sick." I've thought of it, but I've always ended up saying the truth. Normally I would give at least 2 weeks of notice, but this ski trip happened so urgently.
Mod please close thread. Problem has been solved.

Well, I guess that should answer most of your questions as the outcome as I see it should be:
1. You said you left several messages. They got the first message but "didn't bother to call you back." That just tells me they don't care about you.
2. If they can't be bothered to call you back - know your role. Don't offer to help. They don't care about you so why should you? Like you said, this job is meaningless.
3. Go snowboard.
