NOx is hard to diagnose, could be alot of things, the easiest way to fix things like that, is to put a high flow cat in the exhaust system and send it through with retarted timing, should pass with flying colors after that :P

I failed NOx, I just cleaned my MAF Sensor, Housing, and changed Air Filter, and gave it a good 10 minute run and timed it so I would not have to be waiting at the AirCare Centre.

But yeah, NOx can be a bunch of things, just a matter of narrowing things down.

The EGR Valve is definitely a suspect.

What I would do is, get a mechanic that you trust, or knows the 240sx very well, and get him/her to inspect it thoroughly. If mechanically-wise, the car is perfect, then I see no reason for the car to not pass AirCare.

It could just be a simple tune-up, and cleaning.

Did the owner say it bombed Air Care? If that's the case, try getting the previous Air Care readings. Depending on what's bombing and how bad it bombed certain areas, you can usually gauge where the problem lies. For example, if it's hydrocarbons, it could be the cat. If it's nitrous oxides, it could be timing or even the EGR valve.

In all honesty, air care shouldn't be a big problem if you're planning on tuning your car

BUT, keep looking!

Common problem withe the 240's are the tube from the EGR transducer burning through, easy and cheap fix. If it only failed NOx you'd be fine, sounds like a cool project. I'd buy it if i didn't already have like 3 cars.
