In Japan, they get shiet done right away. You don't see 2 construction workers working at turtle speed with 2 other fat guys "supervising" them like you see in Canada.
Here, it takes years for them to build something as relatively simple as the Port Mann bridge, and we don't even have to deal with the typhoons + earthquakes that they have to deal with.
It takes them weeks to cover pot holes/ pave the roads for fuck sakes!

I have found vancouver construction is beyond amazement. Why do we need to pay workers 15-20/hr to hold those "stop" and slow down signs when a simple automated machine can do exactly the same for 0? In taiwan whenever there is a construction they just put up a fake construction worker that waves his arms around and get you to slow down and isn't wasting taxpayers money. I know of kids that get paid 15/hr to listen to their ipods and to "make sure that people don't step into the drying cement". I find that totally unacceptable...

^ and you can also thank the oil companies that produce asphalt that is designed to break up in 1 year after winter.
At the same time, there's a degree of risk working on the road side. If you've ever tried to stand in traffic to work for hours, you'd know how much close-calls there are.
