I just took a quick scan of the motherboards on sale at NCIX as a reference, and almost all of them still have PCI slots. Sure, there may be a few brand new higher end motherboards that don't have PCI slots, but most still do.

If 99% of the computers in use today still have PCI slots, that means it's not obsolete yet.

threads like these totally seperate the youngin's from the older crowd.

tangible things always hold a lot more value than digital things, whether it be a sentimental or not.

Who still has a Beta Max player? :lol My parents told me they bought their first VCR back in the late 70's early 80's for like over 1000 dollars. Mind you that was back then where $1000 was crazy money LOl. Sigh....

Tons of stuff went obsolete in the last decade. How times have changed. Surprised nobody mentioned the following:

DVD -> Blu-Ray
For movies, yes. For anything computer related, no, not yet.

LAN -> Wi-Fi
Uhhh... no. You think big companies are going to run a network off wireless routers?

Windows XP -> Windows 7
90% of the company computers here still run XP.

HTML -> Java
This doesn't even make sense.

Wired keyboard/mouse -> Wireless keyboard/mouse
I still use wired and wouldn't have it any other way. This is just preference.

Cell Phone Number Pad -> Touchscreen/QWERTY
I fucking hate touchscreen only phones, and I'm sure I'm not the only one. Until you can get tactile feedback from a touchscreen, buttons are here to stay.

HDD -> SSD
Walk into a datacentre and look at all the SSDs you'll see. Oh wait, you won't see any.

IPv4 -> IPv6
Open up your command prompt. Ping google. What do you get? An ipv4 address.

FAT32 -> NTFS
I bet you your USB stick is formatted as FAT32.

PCI is only for legacy support just like PS/2 keyboard and mouse ports

lardo4life 01-03-2010 12:05 PM

You said new boards didn't come with any PCI slots. I linked you to a new board that had PCI slots. Just because one enthusiast board doesn't have any PCI slots doesn't mean it's obsolete.

whats the point of having PCI slots when all new add on cards now are made in PCI-E format? RAID, Sound, Network, TV Tuners etc....

if you had an old PCI card that requires a PCI slot, that just means your card is obsolete

There are electronic signature verification things you can get, but only if it's accepted within the organization. For laws I'm not sure you can do that.

hopefully by next decade we can write:

Things that are obsolete:

x. War on terror

Not to mention the countless Ethernet cards you can still get.

You're really bad at this, you know?

SpuGen 01-03-2010 04:48 PM

You know whats obsolete?

Common sense on Revscene.

Doesn't matter. That's new, uncommonly used technology that will eventually make currently used technology obsolete. The point of this thread is what current, commonly used technology has made old technology obsolete.

I havn't brought a PCI card in years.... everything from RAID to tv tuners are all PCI-E now

you can still currently "use" cassette tape and buy them in stores, doesnt mean they are not obsolete :rolleyes:

Why buy a Bluray disc for $35 when the average viewer doesn't care that the same DVD for $20 less isn't as good, quality wise? Outside of enthusiasts, most people don't care about new technology, especially if it's out of their average price range? And yes, a PCI-E card may be the same price as a PCI, but then they have to upgrade to a new motherboard (such as buying a BD player for BR discs), so why bother when what they currently have works just as well in their eyes?

CP.AR 01-03-2010 06:33 PM

Lol i just bought a firewire card (her Mini DV needs it) for my GF about a month ago - it was PCI, there was only one card offered in PCI-E and it offered only a humble 2 ports as opposed to the 6 I had

Mini DV and Firewire are both also obsolete in this day and age

its all about High Def HD cam and USB 3.0

InvisibleSoul 01-03-2010 10:40 PM

Fuck... shut up, Hyde.

Your logic is terrible. Even if it was true that ALL add-on cards are available now in the PCI-E interface, that doensn't mean PCI is now obsolete.

Something becomes obsolete when it is no longer used by the majority of people.

Just because something BETTER exists, doesn't make the older technology obsolete... yet. Not until the new has become the de facto standard and the use greatly exceeds the old.

Bottom line is PCI-E has NOT reached that status yet, and almost all motherboards still have PCI slots, and many expansion cards sold are still with the PCI interface.

Therefore, PCI is NOT obsolete - YET.

Wat?

That has nothing to do with the LAN vs Wi-Fi debate.
