| Italians Discover How to Change Wood to BONE
...........unfortunate "sounds dirty but isn't" title, this is actually pretty cool, a new way to make artificial bones.
...that being said, I am juvenile enough to not be able to stop chuckling at the title. hurhurhurhur http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/8438209.stm |

thats awesome,
i can see this becoming more popular in the future. People who are short and want to be tall can potentially replace their bones with this material. Probably would be very expensive. They said that old bones fused with this material, I wonder if this material will repair itself if you break a bone in the place where this material is located.

It's not actually bone though...or what? I don't really get it because I'm not a science major, but would it be susceptible to the body rejecting it like with organ transplants?

All cells have some sort of protein receptor, and since this wont match the patient's original makeup.....
but who the fuck knows im just in bio 12. |

like the bbc correspondent stated the applications are limitless
osteoporosis patients, dental patients (many people need artificial bone placed in their jaw to help with implants), potential amputees, amputees (although i imagine it could only apply to people missing fingers), accident patients who've had their bones crushed etc etc etc
but this is still decades away, although it says human testing wont happen for another 5 years, if things are successful (most of the time they aren't) it would still take some more years for doctors to be trained, facilities to be made etc
the fact that its fusing with animals is a stunning accomplishment

i did a module in biomaterials at school and its nice to see an organic material to hopefully one day replace titanium or ceramic.

^i wasn't so sure about that...
as far as i know, arthritis results from not enough cushioning between bones and not a factor of bones itself.
