Whats the process of being laid off..

My fiance has been with a company for 2.5 years, assistant manager etc etc. She showed up for work this morning and the store is empty and says went out of business.

What steps should she take... will she still get paid for all of her scedualed shifts?? Will ei do anything? How long does EI take. Is there any monies that will be owed to her for being let go with no reason??

Its family Pizza Kelowna. franchise, the owner still ownes other stores.

That is one shitty situation. She should get some sort of compensation. But she wont be getting any money for her future "scheduled" shifts. EI should be able to help.

Have fun, dealing with the government is a pain.

make sure the employer gives her an ROE and the employer sends a copy to Service Canada - else she will not be eligable for EI

x2, i was just about to say she needs it in writing from her employer that she's been laid off. otherwise it's zero compensation. the EI application was rather simple and i started getting payments in about 4-6 weeks.

My previous employer (Passport Canada) screwed up and forgot to give the ROE to Service Canada... Hooray for the efficiency of the federal government!

If the employer has a franchise she'll very likely get her docs. It just looks like it could take more time. She better try to get those documents soon, just in case the other stores close down..

Her employer appears to be a coward. One of the most difficult things to do as a business owner or manager is to straight up tell your employees that the business is going teets up and it looks like he/she couldnt do it or didnt have the courtesy to do it. If thats true, he(it) took the easy way out.

Girlcrazy, one word of advise is to let your fiancee know that she's perfectly entitled to collect EI and its ok to do it. Im going to guess you need two incomes to survive.

In the "business" world thats just the way things work in bust and boom cycles. It could be a traumatic time for her, so you and/or her family has got to be there for her and provide the necessary support. Sounds kind of strange but it doesnt necessarily have to be money especially if you have some quality time.

Your fiance working for 2.5 years really helps on her EI file. In fact, We almost had 2 elections last year because of EI reforms(correct me if im wrong). If my memory serves me correctly, she will have better entitlements because she has proven to be a "long-time/term" worker.

I think the "government" did a good job with recent EI reforms. In a way, it has the power to set the "lifestyle" of Canadians through government intervention or lack of it in a world economy that seems to be in a perpetual boom and bust cycle.
Its probably a bad example to use the US as an example but the percentage of people that have collected food stamps in one way or another in there lifetime should tell you how the world works.

Make sure she gets started with the paperwork right away. The earlier she starts the better, you don't need all the paperwork right away, just let them know the situation. Best bet would be to go to or contact one of Service Canada's offices.

http://www.servicecanada.gc.ca/eng/ei/menu/eihome.shtml

As for getting compensation from the owner of the business, hopefully they only shut down that one store but I would track the owner down right away. They're spineless for not informing their own employees.
