last time i went to Tony's beef noodle place these two old chinermen were talking about how shitty the noodles were and how it tasted like rat O.O

windchaser 01-06-2010 06:52 PM

umm , this isn't ur typical chinese beef brisket noodle .. I haven't been to this restaurant so I don't know how authentic it is. As far as I know, the authentic taiwan beef noodle does belong to taiwan and is totally different from the chinese style, which can be found everywhere in taiwan

I have, and I would say that the chef there is the real master in Vancouver. I know his history, what restaurants he's opened & sold.

Another favorite of mine is Accord on Kingsway.

I think for TW beef noodles, it is a little hard to say of one place that they serve the best, because everyone makes it slightly different. There is no SET recipe for it that is passed through generations and families, so there will always be some variations/slight differences.

What is raman? :P
For laksa...I would say go to Bo.

I lke Kintaro & Benkei, both for different reasons. Kintaro for the authentic feel & dive like environment, fatty broth & meats, and Benkei for the more modern & varied menu.

I would like to try Motomachi or G-Men to compare though!

hirevtuner 01-06-2010 09:53 PM

it took me 4 trips just to try G-Men once cuz they are always closed when I go

miss_crayon 01-07-2010 12:33 AM

i don't care what you guys say about lsd!! i absolutely  them!!

i'm actually not a fan of pearl house if anything. i find the broth not beefy enough..and i like it beefy.

joquio 01-07-2010 09:45 AM

Chef Hung's place sucked ass (for its price).
Nothing special just super overpriced for very basic regular beef noodles.
Portion was really small for the price you pay too.

I have to agree with MugenEvolution that Pearl house has the best taiwanese beef noodle so far and I also like the one in crystal mall food court. It has a special herbal taste in their soup.

PS: Lao shan dong is just disgusting. Unless you like MSG shit.

Pearl house has better beef noodle

willystyle 01-07-2010 11:10 AM

Lao Shan Dong is the shit.. :)

Obsideon 01-07-2010 11:45 AM

I've walked by this Chef Hung place a couple times but I was crunched for time so there was no way I was gonna line-up to get in... but after reading the reviews here I'm glad I didn't since it doesn't seem to be worth it. At $11 a bowl that's outrageous! Most other places have it for roughly 3/4 of the price! I'll wait til the "fad" dies down then maybe if they aren't so busy then maybe their quality will be more top notch and the prices will go down?... since he is supposed to be super famous for his noodles ...

LSD is great for value and it's the quantity is huge!... but it's definitely not the best bowl I've ever had. The noodle was pretty good, thick and just the right chewy texture but the soup wasn't that impressive.

willystyle 01-07-2010 12:52 PM

Aside from the quantity and price, I actually prefer LSD's beef broth over other ones I've tried, such as Tony's Beef Noodle, Wang's Beef Noodle, and No.1. Beef Noodle.

tbh, all the authentic taiwanese places that were SUPER good are all closed down now. like ricos in richmond and "si ma ma" that use to be across the street from mercedes benz on broadway. si ma ma was located in that complex with the macs, adult source video and fish on rice...that place was beyond amazing and i cried when they closed down.

hellyeah08 01-08-2010 12:13 AM

the reason that chef hung always has a long line up is because their cooks are so slow
I cant stand the way the cook
its an open kitchen guys!!
DO YOUR JOB @ YOUR BEST!!

i thought their best dish was fried chicken on rice.... and the taiwanese restaurant beside richmond sushi has exactly same fried chicken on rice. Which is their one of the best dish as well....

IfUCare 01-08-2010 11:32 PM

well recently i tried the noodle place "beefy beef noodle" on main and king ed.
i like it, the noodle was chewy and the broth was strong but not salty and the beef was soft but still had texture.

si ma ma was the dopest place on earth! my mom would take us kids there every weekend despite the drive because it was SO worth it.

i totally remember the chicken on rice dish--they actually still had it when they changed it to a "cantonese" style restaurant but it wasn't enough to keep us going there after all the taiwanese dishes were taken off the menu.

my favorites included 'you yu geng' (squid thick soup), mi gao (rice cake) and i loved how their marinated tofu was somewhat dried. omgg....seriously i'd sell my body if it was to get them to reopen again.

skyxx 01-09-2010 12:41 AM

sorry i can't imagine paying 11 bucks for a bowl of noodles. Especially for Taiwanese noodles.

crayon...from a foodie perspective, i <3 you. soooo much. but that's just my yearning for a taiwaneseee lady. or at least someone who knows the food..

if i opened up my own si mama, youd sell your body to me?

back to topic, i'm not going to try chef hung. fucking insane to pay $11..even I sometimes cringe when I pay 6.95/7.95 elsewhere because I know i could be having it for dirt cheap back home.

I went to this joint last week. I think they opened up not too long ago. But I heard the owner there runs the same place in bby near BCIT. The food and BBT was very good and there selection has a good variety. I am going to give Chef Hung a go tonight. Hope the line ups won't be so bad :)

Tried when they opened back in the summer or so last year. Never going back again as the everything I ordered sucked. Beef Noodles, got some rice, a bubble tea, and spicy wontons. Maybe they have improved or maybe not but based on my first experience you can count me out.
