Spirit Bear.

Seriously, they've been the mascots for like, two years. Figure it the fuck out already.

Also: ultimate fail for not noticing the mascot that doesn't belone.

$100 per banner isn't that expensive at all (if you're somewhat aware of how much it costs to procure things). This story is just trying to make something out of nothing. If you divide the total cost by the number of people living in Vancouver, that works out to about a buck each.

And to those who complain about the mascots, I'm glad that you're not marketers because as far as I'm concerned, they've been a huge hit with the kids (and some adults as well).

At least they are made in Canada... unlike our Olympic apparel that's impossible to buy.

How much it costs to produce things? Are you kidding me? This stuff at the manufacture level would be PENNIES. You can buy a full scale flag for about 15$ and your telling me that a banner that size will costs 2-3x more to make? What about the labor being 50$ to put up per flag? Why can't we just hire a bunch of chinamen, I'm sure they can put FIFTY up for the same price.

I have never failed so many people in 1 thread.

IT COSTS ROUGHLY 50% TO INSTALL and 50% TO PRODUCE THESE FLAGS.
Made in ontario = canadian products
Installed by CUPE workers = canadian business

If they outsource this type of work where does it end? How many of you have parents/family members in CUPE? You have to pay people what they are worth. Yes a monkey could hang those signs, but then the CUPE workers (ie. your friends/family) wouldn't do it, leading to cut-backs, leading to lost jobs, leading to more of you idiots bitching about how there are no jobs or people aren't getting paid enough to live in an expensive city. For those who actually read the initial post = thank you.

coles notes: many of you should never go into business or be leaders because you are too cheap and bitch to much

^That got me thinking..

Any ECON ppl reading this thread? I have a question:

Hypothetically, if you can outsource for, say, $10, then you get:
1) banners
2) $40 to spend on something else.

If you don't outsource, for $50 you get
1) banners
2) $0 for something else.

That benefits CUPE workers at the expense of where the $40 could have gone. In effect, you're shifting money from Vancouver tax payers to CUPE workers in Ontario.

OTOH, in the first scenario, $10 is leaving the country and can't be spent again.

In general, which is better for the country?

Do you happen to work in manufacturing? Do you work in importing/exporting?

The price would not be pennies, no matter where you make it, considering the relatively small quantity (5000).

Where would we get such "Chinamen"? The last time I checked, the minimum wage here is $8.00/hour. And contrary to what you might think, this job does require some level of skill and there's some risk involved. You do realize that the unionized workers who are performing this work already do this type of work on a regular basis for other city art projects? If you hired a bunch of "chinamen", you would have to put each through a safety course as well as train them which would eat significantly at the initial savings.

I do have experience with manufacturing and importing and exporting so YES I do know what i'm talking about. Yeh, so their Canadian made, so what? Are we trying to make money off our own taxpayers or are we trying to cut costs so in the end WE wont have to pay? I'm not seeing shit out of something that's made out east. The Chinamen comment was simply a joke to point out how ridiculously we are overpaying some of these city or outsourced workers. I don't how FIFTY dollars PER BANNER seems like a justified number to you when the work involved is a lift car.

I would hope that 50 dollar figure includes the trip to take them back down again.

Does $25 to install sound better? Or do we still need some "chinamen"?

I would think that the next time they take them down, they would be putting other ones up. If it helps you sleep, then think that its $25 to put up, and $25 to take down the old ones already there?

If they re-sell those banners post-olympics, I am sure they could turn a profit..or close to it (especially because olympic stuff is hella expensive already)
