I'd hate to compare us to the American occupation of Iraq but I think that Haiti could benefit from Canada rolling in, helping rebuild, and establishing a permanent presence on that half of the island. Even if they don't join us or become a commonwealth nation we can still have a lasting impact.

Haiti would be a terrible country to bring into the Dominion (using an old, British Empire term since we are talking about colonialism.) Haiti has virtually nothing in terms of resources - forests have been virtually eliminated and the resulting erosion has washed all the soil into the sea. The small, but wealthy elite extract transit fees from drugs coming up from South America.
If you look at the country's history, it's basically been a basket case since the beginning.

Death in itself isn't so bad. Its the suffering and fear thats the worst part.
Look at all of the people who are trapped underground without water and are pinned by something. For them death is marching slowly forward. They have two days left, tops, but every moment seems like an eternity. Panic and helplessness are probably driving them crazy.
I'd hate it and if it happens here I pray for a reasonable level of safety or a quick death. Posted via RS Mobile |

Why don't we as a nation take all that money, and instead of going to help a foreign nation, why don't we help our own fucking people first? Interesting thought.

FYI guys, all legit. I made a $5 donation to the Salvation Army in Canada on my fido phone.
Text Haiti to 45678 to donate $5 to the Salvation Army in Canada (Bell/Rogers).
Text Haiti to 85944 to donate $5 to Rescue Union Mission and MedCorp International.
Text Haiti to 25383 to donate $5 to the International Rescue Committee.

I wasn't too familiar with Haiti until now. Apparently, although it may not be credible, Haiti used to be an agricultural based economy. Albeit if they can now or not doesnt matter, but they have become more of a manufacturing-based economy in recent decades. Could Port-au-Prince have become less vulnerable if it were to stay agriculturally-'dominant'?
After watching the news for an hour Im still stuck on whether or not to donated Haiti or ' Help a Girl' foundation. I guess I'll know by tomorrow.

is it just me or is this not getting the same news coverage as the asian tsunami 2005 or 06 aftermath which had roughly the same amount of casualty.
perhaps it was close to xmas so a lot more people were donating/looking for families on holidays there.

I think it's good to donate, because it's a nice gesture.
However, it would be even better if we could be sure the money donated makes it to the intended destination. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/us_haiti_following_the_money |
