| What's a really good 22"/23" LCD monitor?
So my 22" Samsung 226BW decided to die so I'm looking to buy a new 22" maybe 23" LCD monitor. NCIX has a 23" Samsung ( http://ncix.com/products/index.php?s...g&promoid=1061) for $179, reviews seem pretty good but is it any good? Should I spend a little more and buy a better monitor? My main use for the monitor will be daily surfing but gaming sometimes.

then the obvious answer is to recommend something GOOD, not something shitty-to-okay but cheap.
HP and Dell both have some nice S-IPS 22" monitors for decent prices if price is really a concern (though it was never stated in the title or OP).

Never buy HP anything.
Dell Asus Samsung monitors are tops.
I'm assuming you're gonna be using your monitor for basic browsing/gaming. Don't listen to the people that tell you to get IPS or VA.
Absolutely not worth the premium unless you do photo/colour work.

I agree with hondaracer. I got a wicked deal on the 2408wfp a couple months back. Ill be holding onto this one for a long time.

I recommend Dell Ultrasharp (must be Ultrasharp) monitors. I recommend you find a friend who has one and use it for a while. To be honest, most people can't tell an S-PVA panel when they see it. There is a difference but most people aren't knowledgeable enough to differentiate. For example, all notebooks have crappy LCDs but very few people know it or complain. One of the easiest ways to tell a poor LCD is to check the off axis illumination. Have you ever used a notebook, and with time slouched in the chair and had to readjust the screen angle. That is a sign of poor off axis illumination.
An easy way to compare monitors is to put them into a dual monitor setup.
All the iMacs use good quality panels, if you have access to one to compare.
Only after you can recognize a S-PVA panel, can you decide if it's worth the extra cash. If you can't tell the difference you will never pay a premium for it.

my customer did not want Piano Black finish, and this is a nice rough finish. He is very pleased with the monitor.

The panels they use seem to have big problems displaying blue at anything but a perpendicular viewing angle. I pointed it out to several people at work who claimed I just hate Macs (which I do, but it's not the point). If you move your head a few inches to the left or right, the blue starts to turn green. It doesn't happen on the PVA or IPS panels (27" or 24" iMacs).

Really good LCD displays are Dell ultrasharps, Apple Cinema displays. Even the Older last gen models are great too! Samsung 305T and 245T are fantastic monitors too. They are more expensive but the viewing angles and colour reproduction is a lot better!. okay i just realized you wanted one for just gaming and web surfing lol whoops! Oh well still the best!

anyone have experience with asus monitors? im looking at the vw266h, reviews have been good and seems to be a good price for a 25.5". also when buying from anitec or ncix do they let u take it out of the box and test for dead pixels first?

At NCIX, you can buy the "dead pixel warranty" which basically lets you return up to 3 times if you find dead pixels. I doubt either store will let you sit there and open up box after box checking the monitors though. Quote:

i'm intersted to get an eyeutility set-up going by the end of this year...but 3 new monitor and a dx11 card is gonna be like $1200 easily

Couldn't find a pic of 3 in portrait mode, but this guy has 2 20" in portrait and a single 30" in landscape mode. 
Back to recommendations though for the OP, how about the Dell Ultrasharp 2209WA. It's an E-IPS screen so you've got the better viewing angles and color reproduction. It's $269 right now at Dell. While it isn't the cheapest monitor out there, it's a pretty decent value for something that's not a TN panel. This particular LCD also seems to get pretty good reviews.
