2011 BMW 335i gets a Single Turbo Engine and a facelift Quote:
http://www.thetorquereport.com/2011_...es_coupe_2.jpg The Current Twin-Turbo 335i: Max. Power 306.2 PS (302.0 bhp) (225.2 kW) @ 5800 rpm Maximum torque 400.0 Nm (295 ft·lb) (40.8 kgm) @ 1300-5000 rpm |
pre-LCI looks better |
all hail direct fuel injection! |
prefer twin turbo |
dont like that new front bumper :/ |
it looks like it has down syndrome. |
got a dumb face. Also BMW is doing factory "single turbo mod" for you like Supras and Skylines. LOL. |
Nothing spectacular in terms of the engine or design. Why don't they just make a 3.5L block with DI only and avoid the turbo altogether? They could probably get 320+ HP with that alone... |

Looks like a 6 series. |
I hope the LED tails will fit on my e92 but the front bumper looks awful. |
i wonder if it will as problematic like the current N54 twin turbo engines... hmmm.. |
Actually the twin scroll (which means basically 2 chambers on the boosted side of the turbo) is what is significant, it saves weight and improves spool up speed. Not to mention remove a few wastegates etc. BTW It has always been a M54 3L block has never been a 3.5L block. Quote:

Well maybe weight is that important. However, it still is basically on par with the 2005 released Toyota 2GR-FSE in terms of power and fuel efficiency. However, that engine does not have a turbo and is plain DI. 2009 335i sedan: 11.9/7.7 according to http://www.bmw.ca/ca/en/newvehicles/...ical_data.html Subtract 1 L/100km according to http://carscoop.blogspot.com/2010/01...nvertible.html for the 2011 model. = 10.9 / 6.7 A GS 350 with a bit more power and a bit less torque (2007+): 10.9/7.4 according to http://www.lexus.ca/lexus/experience...1KST&year=2010 So I still stand by saying nothing spectacular, especially considering the stress the turbo adds on the engine (and squeezes out that extra MPG on the highway as a result). Now if it was a large jump in power and the same MPG I would agree it would be a good upgrade. |
^ Maximum torque for BMW: 295 ft·lb @ 1300-5000 rpm compared with Lexus' 274 ft·lb @ 3,600 rpm |
I saw this on e90 post and noticed the chrome pieces on the front lower grilles, looks familiar... http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3161/...24af290087.jpg Except it looks alot better on the TL. |

http://www.thetorquereport.com/2011_...ries_coupe.jpg The front is kind of swollen because it has to meet the latest pedestrian safety regulations. It's affecting most new cars. |
^ the angel eyes look much brighter though..... |
The angel eyes are LEDs which is cool. |
3.0L is the magic number for that size of car for insurance reasons in other countries. the single turbo should bring more efficiency and bump fuel economy up. ppl with supras switch to a single turbo setup because they are upgrading to a single way more efficient turbo. though in theory, a twin/sequential turbo setup is suppose to spool up better, but this is based on all turbo's being the same performance. looks boring |
don't really like the front end. |
I guess I am the only one who loves this thing, especially the badge! :haha: |
No one saying it is spectacular, the N55 is an improvement over previous N54... Maximum torque at certain RPM is just one data point and honestly a rather useless comparison for real life usage. The torque curve is what has been improved here, where the twin scroll turbo shines. Along with manufacturing and cost efficiencies. Actually a better more useful comparison will be a topograph with all the gearing / shift points information for all the transmissions. Notice that N55 is mated with the new DCT. Transmission and weight pays a large part of the fuel efficiency in the numbers you are quoting. If you want to skew the number further you can include cars like Evora which is much lighter than any cars Toyota makes. As for the look, it is minor aerodynamic improvements (more closed vents to improve Cd). I think when the 3er came out it already conform to pedestrian safety (it was enacted in the EU around 04). Remember the 3er is already in its last few years, so it will look odd when it has bits of F01's design theme grafted on it. Quote:
