| VPD to move out of Main Street police building http://www.news1130.com/news/local/a...olice-building
VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - Vancouver Police say they will be moving out of their Main Street police building, and taking over the current VANOC building on Graveley Street near Boundary Road next spring, after VANOC has completed its job post-Olympics.
The building at 312 Main Street is home to 700 police personel, including officers and administration staff. Police say they are not abandoning the Downtown Eastside, and 72 officers who patrol that area will be based out of a yet-to-be-determined building near the old building.
VPD Chief Jim Chu says the current Main Street building is overcrowded, and costs too much to maintain. "Our building at 312 Main is occupied well past its useful life and represents a significant risk in terms of our business continuity." Chief Chu says ideally, Vancouver would have one big police station and a standby facility. That could happen in seven to 10 years depending on the availability of funding.
The move is possible due to a $5 million grant from the federal government and $10 million from the City of Vancouver for renovations to the VANOC building to make it suitable for police. The fate of the current Main Street building will be debated by Vancouver City Council.
the area around the police station is already a shit hole.. what was once gastown/near chinatown/hell even no.5 orange.. do you guys think this will increase crime/junkies/homeless around the area or decrease and make the area a better place?

The massive police presence there never did much anyways. The junkies know exactly what they can get away with in that area, and thats quite a bit.

I'm sure that building will be re-developed into an apartment. It's a prime location

If that area cleans up. 20meters down is full of syringes and druggies/drug dealers.
When night hits, you DO NOT want to be there.

It will be interesting as the Vanjail is there, wonder how they are going to process the fingerprints and execute the original warrants from now on...

hahaha good that they finally get a new building... they've been talking about moving to the yard for ages and the plan never materialized.

Bestbuy, Skytrain station is just 1 block away. Broadway is a few blocks away. You can see false creek. I dunno, it really sounds like a prime location for condo/apartment.

some of u guys have it wrong. They actually purposely move hte junkies to that area because that's where the police station is. They figure they can't relaly get rid of junkies, so they make sure they stay down there.
If the police station moves, I'm thinking maybe so will the junkies. But to whatever spot the eastside unit gets stationed to.

the new building looks great, but if they're going to scale down their department on main st. they should really turn the remaining over to social services, to aid the homeless and addicts
