Depends if you are working in Vancouver or in fort Mac.

Vancouver: 17-24<-very rare
Fort Mac: 36+ depending on company

:failed:

DC5-S 05-20-2012 12:25 PM

I get $23 at my fulltime job and $30 at my parttime as a forth class. It's tough to find work but I know of a place looking to hire people. U just need connections.

PJ 05-20-2012 01:11 PM

3rd Class here.

I don't know where you guys are getting this info from. There are lots of jobs in Vancouver. Not rare at all. You just have to search around and ask around.

Straight out of school I had 3 interviews for jobs that paid $30+

Some old classmates who only have their 4ths are making $25-$30 here in Vancouver. I don't think anyone in my old class is making less than $22. Hell, one guy who changes light bulbs at a community centre is making $26.

The jobs are out there. Go ask around. Go talk to BCIT profs, join online groups, talk to a headhunter. Checking Craigslist once a week and sending out resumes isn't going to get you anywhere.

Do you think the pay is the pay same for 4th class if someone takes general or technical?

PJ 05-20-2012 01:39 PM

Legally, you end up with the same certification if you're only doing your 4th.

But in the employer's eyes, they'll wonder why you took the "dumbed down" General instead of Technical. The company I work for now (and a bunch of different companies that my classmates work for) only hires 3rd's, or 4th's from Technical. They don't even look at resumes with General on it. It really depends on the company and the area of work you go into.

Pay won't be any different, because Technical or General, you still end up with a 4th. But your chances of getting hired might be different.

C5_Ryder 05-20-2012 10:01 PM

Pay rate range from 15 to 40+ an hour in the lower mainland. Yes their is more then one place that pays over 40. Majority of people are in the 25 to 35 range. I'm talking about 4th class jobs.

Meowjin 05-20-2012 11:33 PM

i guess the money job to have is at the chev refin? i have a relative that works there and makes killer bank.

This is correct. In Vancouver, 4ths generally range from $20 to $30 ish, some more, some less.
3rds range anywhere from $35 to $60+, the person with the highest salary in Vancouver that I know personally is a 3rd making $65.

Chevron Refinery is one of the better places to be, but still, their starting wage is considered only average at around $33, seeing as they mainly hire 3rds or higher.

Should also note, in this line of work, salary raises seem to generally be very large. During my first year at this company, I registered and took some more training courses, and I got about a 30% salary raise. I thought this was mind blowing, so I asked my old classmates working at different companies, and they all seem to be getting these similar generous raises. So keep in mind, starting wage doesn't always mean that's all you're going to get, always ask about advancement opportunities at your interview.
Oh, and overtime opportunities as well. A lot of companies in this line of work have irregular shifts, so a lot of them pay double for overtime. And at certain companies, you can work all the overtime you want. This is huge.

Greenstoner 05-21-2012 05:04 PM

tons of 4th job in vancouver

if you are with your 3rd i believe its better off to be working in alberta

PJ 05-21-2012 10:45 PM

Depends what you mean by "better off."
A lot of old classmates with their 3rds (going on their 2nds now) are in Fort Mac making 160k+

I chose to stay in Vancouver, because there's more opportunities for other things in life aside from work.

I work Mon-Fri day shifts, no rotating shifts, no night shifts, no headache, get to be with my friends and family.. Leaving Van wasn't worth the extra salary to me personally.
Also I don't plan on staying in this industry much longer..

What kind of experience do you have?

crazie_gsr 05-23-2012 06:29 AM

03coupe-general program coarse load consist of 8 coarses. Very manageable. Mainly your basic math and physics stuff. Almost a repeat of grade 11-12 stuff. Touch of electrical. I think the only new stuff you learn is the hvac stuff. The rest is a carry over from high school if my memory serves me correctly.

Basic maint. Pipe threading, changing belts, filters, gauge glsses, valves etc. would like more experience in maint tho. Ran water tube, firetube, and miura boilers.

03c0upe 05-23-2012 11:09 AM

Seems like its a lot of shift work:QQ:

Are you with 1 instructor throughout the entire program, and will be 1 course at a time?

crazie_gsr 05-23-2012 03:52 PM

Multiple instructors. But some instructors teach more than one class.

And ya, it's mainly shift work. There are some places like PJ where you are required to work days only but quite rare.

PJ 05-23-2012 05:01 PM

Most building maintenance is Mon-Fri day shifts, wages range anywhere from $20 up to $40, depending on the building. But mostly in the $25 range. The $35-$40 jobs in building maintenance are still out there, but more rare.

Basically everything else is shift work. If you're okay with making $25/hr on day shifts, then go into buildings, or try your luck with the higher paying buildings. If you want the guaranteed higher wages with only day shifts, maybe consider becoming an electrician instead.

MaGNuM16 05-23-2012 07:28 PM

are you still at ewos?

604nguyen 05-23-2012 09:21 PM

im an electrician and worked as a 'power engineer' without my 4th class for RBC building maintenance
im thinking about getting my 4th class

i think having dual ticket is good, especially this combo, any thoughts?
theres a plus side that the electrical work doesn't need to be sub'd out to a contractor

crazie_gsr 05-23-2012 09:28 PM

I am a third class and used to do electrical. I didn't finish the electrical program as I decided it was not what I wanted to do for the rest of my life and didn't want to waste time. I have a strong electrical background and it sure made finding work as a PE much easier. I almost got first dibs on interviews before my peers cause they really like having a more well rounded hire. A millwright ticket will be a GREAT asset to have with the PE ticket. Something to consider.

Looks like you have some experience, are you familiar with DDC? That is very important.
