Makes me sick, I wanna bomb Mofo inventor/seller's house!!

Razor Ramon HG 01-24-2010 11:41 AM

Did no one actually try it beforehand? Retards.

The ADE 651 consists of a swivelling antenna mounted via a hinge to a plastic handgrip. It requires no battery or other power source, its manufacturer stating that it is powered solely by the user's static electricity. To use the device, the operator must walk for a few moments to "charge" it before holding it at right angles to the body. After a substance-specific "programmed substance detection card" is inserted, the device is supposed to swivel in the user's hand to point its antenna in the direction of the target substance. The cards are claimed to be designed to "tune into" the frequency of a particular explosive or other substance named on the card.[2] According to Husam Muhammad, an Iraqi police officer and user of the ADE 651, using the device properly is more of an art than a science: "If we are tense, the device doesn't work correctly. I start slow, and relax my body, and I try to clear my mind."[3]

Seriously, how can anyone assume that this was real ?

El Bastardo 01-24-2010 12:45 PM

Basically they look like hot glue guns with a wire sticking out of the bottom. The "cards" are those RFID cards most of us who work in offices have as "swipe" or "scan" cards and serve no actual purpose. The device itself can't actually read the cards either as it lacks the technology to read the card.

Its been x-rayed by the US military and they said theres very little in the way of technology inside. No microcontroller, nothing to detect proximity or any sort of particles.

Its like a fucking dowsing rod

The thing is; you have to wonder how many bombers were scared off by this device? No matter how in-effective it was in practice, the fear of being detected by some mystery technology by someone who didn't understand it/know it didn't work probably prevented some deaths.

At$ 40k a pop I wish I would've thought of the idea. The inventor made about 5k profit per "detector" and sold a few million dollars worth so hes laughing all the way to the bank.

rsx 01-24-2010 12:54 PM

Stupid Iraqi government.

Supafly 01-24-2010 01:04 PM

just goes to show that when society gets desperate, ignorance will prevail.

!Tigger 01-24-2010 02:16 PM

.fail.... Iraqis... fail...

Vansterdam 01-24-2010 02:44 PM

wow FAIL

InvisibleSoul 01-24-2010 03:33 PM

The level of failure for everything involved here is just staggering.

you're saying you that plastic junk costs $35k ??? :haha::haha:

he probably made like $34990 profit and $5k/ea went to advertising $10 went to manufacturing

FeistyBearH22a 01-24-2010 05:08 PM

jeebus. This dude needs to be shot.

hal0g0dv2 01-24-2010 05:45 PM

what a joke

DC5-S 01-24-2010 07:40 PM

wow that guy should be in jail

Brianrietta 01-24-2010 08:47 PM

Actually, the guy was detained on Friday and then bailed out.

'Refused to tell secret'
Mr McCormick, 53, was detained on Friday on suspicion of fraud by misrepresentation, British police said. He has since been bailed.
Another explanation for the current controversy came from a senior Iraqi interior ministry official, Assistant Deputy Minister General Tareq al-Asl, interviewed by the newspaper al-Sharq al-Awsat.
"The reason the director of the company was arrested was not because the device doesn't work, but because he refused to divulge the secret of how it works to the British authorities, and the Americans before them," the general was quoted as saying.
"I have tested it in practice and it works effectively and 100% reliably."
If it weren't for oil, stupid retards like this senior government official would still be riding camels around their fields.

that equals 29990 profit

Teriyaki 01-24-2010 10:29 PM

that is MASSIVE FAIL.

But yes, in a cup half full type of thing. The device might have prevented some bombings merely by the fact that some bombers would be scared off by these so called, devices.

Could the money have been put to something else? Probably.

seakrait 01-24-2010 11:30 PM

no way the bombers would be put off my these devices... even if they really worked. these bombers have way more balls and conviction to do their destructive tasks that they're willing to take on the US Army....

and it's a wonder how a scam like this ever made it past any sort of scrutiny from the iraqi government... when you're desperate i suppose... or maybe there's some sort of kickback to the iraqi government for buying all that crap

threezero 01-24-2010 11:34 PM

^^^ I want to agree with the iraqi government getting kickbacks.

now way they would spend that amount of cash on sumthing and not even bother to check it out. they could of brought a shitload of bomb sniffing dogs and maintain them for that price.

J-Chow 01-25-2010 12:59 AM

wow. what a douchebag.

Detect and diffuse bombs the simple way.

Do it "the hurt locker" way.

no the guy sold it for $40k each

the $35k remark was about cost and the profit being $5k (from the $40k total)

It is incredible! Who will ever think there is a page dedicate to ADE 651!

So your saying you think there is 35K in Cost associated with this fake device? and only 5K profit?

Did you buy one too at "cost" and laughed all the way to the mine field?

El Bastardo 02-27-2011 10:40 AM

Since this thread is a year old I've forgotten what my logic was but the $35k was likely a mix of manufacturing costs and bribery. I think I forgot to make that point in my original postings.

Big ups to our new member Alan Turing for bringing this thread back from the dead.

That link was a good read. Sounds like it could be snake oil with a REALLY good salesman.

CanadaGoose 02-27-2011 07:49 PM

This makes me sick

You know for sure there were kickbacks and bribes involved in this. Everyone just clawing to make a quick buck at the cost of 'cheap' lives, it's disgusting. This reminds me of the dragon skin vs. interceptor body armour controversy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dragon_Skin_%28armor%29) ... not enough kickbacks or bribery involved there

ADE-651 aka. piece of shit fucking dowsing rod. I'm suprised they didn't bundle it with a free tin foil hat
