The Only HTIB systems I like are the KEF systems. |

dude if you have $1000 to spend on a home theatre system, you can do WAAAY better buying individual components over an HTIB...
as for what you should buy, consult the guys over at AVS Forums...they know their stuff http://www.avsforum.com/
There are a TON of posts you can search focused around poeple looking for input on what to buy within a certain budget....$1000 is a pretty common budget so i'm confident you will find a lot of info that will suit your specific needs.

We bought a Sony HTIB a few years ago, and it's not bad. We have a small living room, so it's adequate. Of course, in the future I want to get B&W speakers and such, but for now, it's just fine.

As JLC said, with $1000 you can have the room to pick individual components. Based on reviews and help from AVS I went with the Sony HTSS360 HTIB for $300. It's the only low range system with HD audio and 3 HDMI imputs so it was a simple choice. With a bigger budget you can do much better. AVS forum is a great resource.

There's few sets from Onkyo in your price range that offer terrific SQ for the money.

I'd say go with KEF 1005 series. They are on sale at ncix for $499. Then you can pick up a good entry level receiver. Onkyo 507 is good enough for the money. I have Onkyo 607 and it's superb.
