Ralph Lauren's new USA Olympics outfits

Noted American fashion designer and Friends guest star Ralph Lauren is back once again to design the clothing that Team U.S.A.'s Olympic athletes will be sporting for the Opening Ceremony. Inspired by designs worn during the 1932 Lake Placid Winter Olympics, these outfits are so American they basically play Bruce Springsteen songs.

Down jackets, turtlenecks, knit caps, and the ubiquitous slim-leg trousers make up the kits that will be worn by every athlete from the lithe Tanith Belbin to the decidedly un-lithe John Shuster. I'm guessing the pants will look better on some people than others, but in general, the traditional look is really nice.

There's a lot more than just the Opening Ceremony outfits though. Ralph Lauren has produced an entire line of clothing that the competitors will be wearing around Vancouver. Shawl-collar cardigans, hooded sweatshirts, and down vests make up the collection. It'll cost you a pretty penny, but it's all available online.

Belbin is excited to wear the gear, telling USA Today, "It's great to have such an interestingly designed collection. I know that's something that all the winter athletes were jealous of when we saw the Beijing Games. We wanted to stand out and look really well put together." Easy for her to say. She'd look good in anything.

I don't know that I 'get' the pants tucked in to socks look, or why this guy is sitting on a mountain in just track pants and a jacket, but it looks alright. The glasses are a little orthopedic, bro.

Seems like this guy could be an extra in an Andre 3000 video.

I like the jackets.

What a croc. Some of these prices are insane. $695 for a jacket? Seriously? The "games" have become a merchandising frenzy.

Wait until after the games when everything will be marked down by like 80%.

Kilinim 02-02-2010 11:08 PM

It's not so much the pricing that bothers me. It's that these cherished, traditional games have become no more than purely cash driven glutton fests.

the games were created to train ppl so countries could get better soldiers (the 'founder'.. some french guy, attached this idea to the Olympics of Athens to gain some form of notoriety) it was never about bringing countries together, since that isnt needed anymore something else had to take its place... no surprise the corporations took over since countries couldnt afford to pay for games without them (Montreal was the open door that let them in)

hotong 02-02-2010 11:27 PM

The jacket looks really nice

In the words of Kanye West, "Ralph Lauren was borin, until I wore um".

StealthFighter 02-02-2010 11:45 PM

the logo is too big but their gear is way nicer than the canadian stuff. screw hbc, they should go back to roots.

twitchyzero 02-03-2010 12:29 AM

roots = quality
hbc = garbage
although they both have awesome canadian heritage

the jackets in OP's first pic is fail..llooks like what the fob grandparents would wear..rest is nice without the large logo

InvisibleSoul 02-03-2010 01:14 AM

I like how their logo is from a sport that has absolutely nothing to do with the Winter Olympics. :p

HollyZ32 02-03-2010 01:33 AM

lol i dont like any of it ugly as sin! lol
the jackets look like something from back in the early 90's
and the other stuff looks like they are about to go play some cricket or have afternoon tea with the inlaws lol
