How the hell are people in Haiti going to afford these? :p

i think its not for them to afford it, but for the countries who send aid to these third world countries to "donate" it to them instead of donating bottled water.

why? well think of the engine oil and gasoline that's going to mix into the water from flooded cars.

this idea doesn't work for emergencies. It does work for places suffering from unclean underground water which a filter is all it needs.

Are you serious? Did you just come in here and read the title and post your marvelous thoughts?

It filters things out at the 15nm level. This thing was designed for emergencies. Did you think it was made for your hiking leisure? It's designed to save lives!

The big feature of this is the 15nm filter, while other filters like MSR or Katadyn have 20nm filters. What kind of waterborne viruses would I have to worry about that can make it past 20nm?

Yes, but it's also no different then the natural water cycle which provides fresh water now.

With everything that is going on in Japan right now I thought it would be a good idea to bump this thread. When I have the cash I'm going in invest in one of these no questions asked. Yes its $200 but I personally think it's a must have for someones earthquake kit.

Psykopathik 03-13-2011 08:22 PM

urine is sterile.

Manic! 03-13-2011 08:45 PM

on the website it says they do group buys for 100 or more lol

J____ 03-13-2011 10:01 PM

correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't it only filters bacteria and virus, the 15nm isnt going to filter out molecules like sodium, uria, or chemicals. It's not going to turn sea water into drinking water no?

any place i can get this locally?

Brianrietta 03-13-2011 10:25 PM

It looks like a pretty solid product and idea. Particularly in third-world countries and areas with poor water quality distributing Life Save Bottles would be hugely successful in improving overall quality of life. Honestly as I see it though for us in North America there are cheaper and more practical items that would be as useful in case of an emergency here.

The MSR and Katadyn filters are more than sufficient for any freshwater source in North America. The primary concern in most of Canada is filtering Giardia out of the water and as it's a protozoan parasite anything at .2mi will catch it. I splurged a while ago on a Katadyn pocket filter and I couldn't be happier. Built exceptionally sturdy (and will filter 50,000 litres of water) but the cheaper MSR filters are perfectly good too.

Katadyn Pocket Water Filter $300.00

Katadyn Base Camp Filter $68.00

MSR MiniWorks EX Water Filter $78.00

It won't filter metals or salt out of the water, no. You'd still want to find a non-salt water source to filter. If you know you're going to be staying in a urban area during an emergency situation, catching rainfall might be the easiest by leaving out buckets and whatnot that you could then filter and drink. There are portable desalinization devices but they're prohibitively expensive:

Katadyn Survivor 06 Water Desalinator $945.00
