Crossing border with car part.

I need to ship my catback exhaust system to US.

rather than paying $200 for shipping here, I might take it down to us and ship it from there.

what kind of hassle or fees am I looking at US custom?

if it's too much of hassle, I might just look for local buyer.

Go across the border, tell them you're going racing and that's your racing exhaust. Or tell them it's a spare. I went across with 4 rims and tires in my trunk (station wagon) and they didn't say anything.

Or, you could just lie and saying you're going down to the outlet malls. They didn't even look at me twice when I did that.

I'll probably have it packed already,
so racing/shopping excuse won't work..
(not to mention lying at the border crossing is not a good idea.)

what fees am I looking at if I tell customer that I'm bringing exhaust down to ship it?

just the import taxes if it's made outside of USA Canada. Then you are good to go (coz you are sending the part down to another state, WA state taxes don't apply).

The buyer is supposed to be liable for the taxes when he receives the package but you shipped it from a US location it will become difficult for the customs to charge him taxes but that's not your problem.

The US Customs (at Pt Roberts) will make you pay a documentation fee.

I drove down to Blaine last year with a set of springs and they didn't say anything or have to pay anything. I just told them I had some springs I sold on eBay and was shipping them in Bellingham. They just waved me though.

If you can, try to pack it after you get over the border so they can inspect it. I'm not sure what they look for, but my springs were kinda dirty looking from the road dirt so it was obvious they were used. Never BS them though - I'd rather pay a few bucks in whatever fees, taxes, etc they charge than be blacklisted in the system and get hassled every time you cross the US border.

If you bought or sold something used and did Paypal as payment, bring the Paypal transaction record to prove the price.
