Exclamation HP customer service -___-

Hi

So I formatted my HP laptop. It came with vista but I didn't like how it was running so I decided to format and install a fresh copy of XP on it.

Everything went fine until trying to install the video driver. It says something like "The NVIDIA Setup program could not locate any drivers that are compatible with your current hardware".

All the other drivers installed fine except for the display/video driver.

So I called HP and they said because my laptop came with vista I have to install vista back on and use the recovery disk that came with it. Then I asked even if i DL the XP version of the drivers how come it doesn't work, and the best the guy could say is because my laptop came with vista so I have to use vista.

My only problem is my dad lost the recovery disk and the other stuff that came with the laptop. I do not want to order another disk unless that is my only option.

Any suggestions I kinda think the HP guy is bullshitting.

no, if the laptop came with vista, chances r the recovery disc will be vista, and have drivers for vista only.

Well, yeah...

Are you sure you're downloading the right drivers from nVidia? They should have the WinXP drivers for your video adapter.

Use an installation of NVIDIA drivers with a modded INF.

Why is this thread labelled HP customer service, when their customer service is doing everything they can after you fucked up a perfectly good piece of technology?

It's obvious you did NOT download the right driver. If you did, this thread would not be here. I recommend you find out the video chip first. You have not stated a model yet. You can find this be looking at the specifications for your notebook. Then post the model number here. Then go to nVidia to find the driver.

The most probable error is that actually you have an ATI or Intel video chip.

Laptops usually have a specific version of mobile nvidia video chipset and just downloading the generic ones won't work. Follow Razor Ramon HG's advice and get a modded inf version of the driver.

I made a slightly related mistake and tried to update my HP's drivers by dling the nVidia ones for my card, however HP tends to run custom modified ones. So if HP hasn't had a driver for XP (chances are they wouldn't) then you'll need to run an OS that's Vista or newer (ie 7). Since you'll have to pay for the Vista discs anyways, I recommend 7.

So you installed an unsupported operating system on your computer without having a backup plan and that's HP's fault ... ?

Slap yourself silly for me ...

No where in my thread did I say anything bad about HP customer service.
And how did you know my piece of technology wasn't fucked already. If it was running as great as it suppose to I wouldn't have to format it. And how is telling me to buy a recovery disc doing the everything they can without an explanation. The best explanation I got was because your laptop came with vista you have to use vista.

It wouldn't be a problem if my dad hadn't lost the discs. I guess its my fault too the motherboard on my desktop died as well, which is why I had to resort to using my dad's laptop who got his friend to install a chinese version of Vista on a perfectly running piece of technology.

All I wanted was a second opinion on whether HP was BSing or not and a possible solution.
Cause to me it seems a bit weird if your able to download the XP driver from the HP website and not be able to use it and is forced to use Vista.

Sorry to say, but the reason it, or any other computer needs to be formatted, is because a user installed/uninstalled too much stuff and the computer got bogged down. Formatting should be an annual ordeal for any user, sadly very few know that and blame the computer for being slow, and just buy a new one (f'king retarded friends of mine). If that laptop hadn't been used since it was built you wouldn't have to format it now.

I used to work for Stream which was hired by HP to do customer support over the telephone. I did desktop and notebook support and the answers the tech gave you are (or at least used to be) the only answer they are allowed to give you. What I would do, is call back and tell them you found your recovery discs but they did not install windows properly and request a set of discs from them for the hassle. If the notebook you have came with Vista, it did not come with recovery discs (none of them do now, you have to burn them yourself from within windows). More often then not, they'll gladly send you out some discs.

Another option, is to go back to where you bought the computer from and ask them if they have a spare set of recovery discs for your model. If not, ask them if they can burn some for you. Generally stores don't mind because it is good service and will likely keep you coming back to them.

Option 1 is kind of shady, but really if most people don't mind downloading movies or music for free, they shouldn't mind lying to get some free recovery discs. Option 2 is legit and won't make you feel like you are cheating anyone.

Yah I know what you mean but sadly this isn't my own computer. Its my dad's and who knows what its been through. I just got tired of how it was running and decided to do a fresh install and get set up as if it were my own.

Thanks to the others for the useful responses
