I don't know how someone in second year has never had a job...
The person should consider doing volunteer work at a nursing home/ senior home. That would look great on a resume but don't bullshit about it. Your friend should get some legit experience before spending time handing out resumes w/ little to no experience.

If all else fails, Mcdonalds! They'll hire anyone. That person might think it's the most stupid thing ever but when you have no work or volunteer history, what do you expect when he/she has never worked. Wasn't volunteer work manditory back in highschool? Was for me like 5-6 years ago.

McDonald's

If your friend don't mind labor work I started out at the superstore warehouse. They seem to hire anyone and there turnover rate seems really high.

is your friend really ugly? .

a store isn't going to hire if they don't need to. best place is to look for places that are.

They probably need to work on the appeal of their resumes or cover letters. Since your friend goes to UBC, there should be some student services that will help with their employability profile.

beggers can't be choosers. He/She will have to start from the bottom. You got to get out there and get experience. you can't just go to post secondary, get your degree and get a good job without experience. Volunteer work looks good on a resume but an employer wants to see work history too.

Small jobs like stock boy/girl/ Mcdonald's is where it all starts... sorry dude

+1

However, people nowadays have a lot of pride and wouldn't be "caught dead" working at mcdonalds/some job that doesn't look cool...but what they don't realize is they are not here to show off to friends. They're here to make ends meet while you're studying to make a better life for yourself in the long run. Not saying this is what your friend is doing, just saying on a general consensus.

working @ mcdonalds is insanely fun! u shouldnt feel bad about it; when my friends worked in there we'd always have so much fun specially during closing or graveyard, i didnt work there but all that time spent there sure seemed like it

ppl dont really want to hire ppl with no experience unless u've acquired a lot of skills, and even then

working in HS/U is one of the best experience because u dun have to worry about money (at least we don't). In a way, there's no politics and everyone is there to get things done and occasionally when work is slow people will have some fun. Meet a lot of people and in turn meet a lot of cute girls, which is a big bonus.

Nothing wrong with not having a job before...you still have two years to pony up on some experience before graduating.

Well I can't read your previous posts because you deleted them but maybe I can chime in with some personal experience.

When I was your age I found it best to work with people around your own. McDonald's I agree is out of your age range if you're 19 now, however you could always try a grocery store for working on the weekends.

I have friends your age who don't have any work experience so don't think you're lost in the mix. Keep your confidence high during these times. Also keep in mind employers paying minimum wage don't care about previous references. Just make sure you can find an employer who likes your personality. A resume for a job paying $10 really has no merit.

However it will help to exaggerate tremendously on your resume particularly in the education and skills departments.

Also might want to add if you are still attending University into 3rd year I would leave out manual labor jobs completely.

Anyway good luck with your search and keep us updated. With the proper approach minimum wage paying jobs are easy to come by. I remember back when I was 18 I got a job everywhere I applied.

It is possible to get a career related job without doing McDonald's or the like. I did it because I was was close to one of my teachers at BCIT, employers were asking him for recommendations and he picked me. I wasn't the best student or even close to it, I was just willing to ask him for advice, and he saw something in me. It was only a part time job, doing entry level accounting work, but it was definitely a start.

One of the guys that comes to my poker home games started off at McDonalds and never really left. He moved through there system, worked around the world for them and he now currently owns 7 franchise stores and is expanding at a pace of about 1 every year. McDonalds was really good to him.
