Um, no it's not. Stop spreading mis-information. M1 mostly composed of a hydro-cracked GroupIII base stock. If you want a genuine full synthetic oil, then you have to look at Amsoil SSO, which is made of Group IV Polyalphaolefins.

Son, you better remove that fail you gave me cause you just FAILED yourself.

First off, it is a well know fact that M1 uses a mineral oil base that has been heavily processed to which it meets the criteria to call themselves a "synthetic" oil. Castrol was the first one to do it back in the 90's.

http://www.syntheticoildealer.com/a_...synthetics.htm

Like what Liquidturbo said, a true "synthetic" oil is one made from synthetic base.

I know this is from Motul, but it gives you a good idea of what a true "synthetic" oil is.

http://www.motul-canada.com/en/faq/faq.shtml?panel=6

And yes, it is well known within the S2ki community about not using M1 as it will cause the TCT to fail.

BTW, true "synthetic" oils are made in Europe and cost at least $15 per quart. The cheapest one would be the German Castrol 0W30 which was on sale at CT a few months ago for $7 a quart.

To be fair, there is some truth to Pennzoil being not that great. Back in the 50's and 60's, Pennzoil was known for some wax/crud build up in engines, but today their oils are quite good.

I'd go and stock up on some more PP but I already have 12 quarts of the german Castrol 0W30 and 8L of Rotella 10W40.
All this is for the summer when I do track days.

And I also have some PP for my next oil change in 2000 km's.

saveth 02-25-2010 08:54 PM

i wish i bought more german castrol when it was on sale. Im about 2000km away from an oil change and it hasnt gone back on sale since.

CORDV6 02-25-2010 09:56 PM

Thats not a bad deal, I usually buy my oil when I go to the states. Most often the price is cheaper, and there is no Enviro tax etc...
I have a bit of a sickness where i tend to HOARD Oil whenever it goes on sale. There was a time when Superstore was clearing out their oil I bought:
30x1L Dino Quaker State for 44cents each- 5w20
Formula Shell 4- 6.99/4 liters x2
Quakerstate Q synthetic 15x4.4L- $12.99each

I filled up a whole shopping cart with just oil. My GF reaction was priceless.WTF!! haha

And the ultimate score ever was at Walmart Queensbrough- 5liters jugs of Quakerstate Dino both in 10w30/5w30 for 5 bucks each. Wiped out the whole inventory in multiple trips to and from the car. Had over 40 jugs in my car that time!!..

Aww man.. I don't really need it, but I have this stupid knack for things where I feel like I should "stock up" just because it's momentarily affordable. :p

You got any evidence on that? IIRC, it's just an urban myth. But hey, I wasn't around in the 50's, so I could be wrong.

You are totally right. There is no concrete proof on the internet, but it is something that has been passed around for a while.

Either way, there is enough proof that the present day Pennzoil is good for it's price.

spoon.ek9 02-28-2010 10:16 AM

i was at the new west walmart yesterday and the only thing i saw for sale at $19.47 was the non-synthetic pennzoil :(
