| Low blow about Canada from Russian media in wake of Olympic woes
Here you thought how nice it was that Canada and Russia could play a major international hockey game and have it just be about the game, free of geopolitical gobbledygook.
No one did a throat-slash gesture (that was us: Phil Esposito, 1972), kicked an opposing player (that was them), took out the other team's best forward (us again), started a bench-clearing brawl to get the other team kicked out of a tournament (them), or told the winning team it couldn't keep its championship trophy (ya, that was us).
It was just a sports event.
But not to Pravda, which, on the eve of the game, ripped Canada a new one. Cathal Kelly of the Toronto Star gets credit for the find: a piece by Timothy Bancroft-Hinchey called, wait for it, "Vancouver: Mutton Dressed As Lamb." Quote:
We all know Canada has problems with the future lines drawn on Arctic maps and we all know Canada lives in the shadow of its larger neighbour to the south. The abject cruelty shown by Canadian soldiers in international conflicts is scantily referred to, as indeed is the utter incapacity of this [country] to host a major international event, due to its inferiority complex, born of a trauma being the skinny and weakling bro to a beefy United States and a colonial outpost to the United Kingdom, whose Queen smiles happily from Canadian postage stamps.
Maybe it is this which makes the Canadians so … retentive, or cowardly. So it is not exactly a huge surprise to have international skating experts from the four corners of the Earth criticising the decision to award the Men’s figure skating Gold medal to the US athlete Evan [Lysacek] over the reigning Olympic Champion Evgeny Plushenko, whose superior performance was inexplicably ignored.
| Whhaaaaaa? Anyone who can find a tie between an undeserved and unproved attack on Canada's military and the results of men's figure skating, please share whatever you've been taking with the group.
The Times of London noted Russia is raring for 2014, when it will host the Games in Sochi, and "the volume is on full." Meanwhile, Russia is having a hard time handling its hard fall from the top, the Christian Science Monitor reports. Quote:
As of Thursday, Russia stood in fifth place overall, with 13 medals, three of them gold. That puts it far behind the front-running US, which has garnered 28 medals, including seven golds. ...
"Political meaning is seen in the Olympics, and now it looks like we are failing in the world arena," says Mikhail Delyagin, an expert with the independent Institute of Globalization in Moscow. "It seems like, in Russia, they shout from every rooftop that (prime minister Vladimir) Putin's plan is a plan for victory. But what do we see? All the boasts about our team proved to be empty words."
| It's not working out for their team, so it's time to make fun of someone else because their bias wasn't confirmed. It's like an entire nation that fits the stereotypes of Boston sports fans, but with more alcohol consumption. The hockey humiliation — imagine the USSR blowing out Canada 8-1 in the 1981 Canada Cup final — must have put the lid right on the jar.
Anyway, needless to say, Bancroft-Hinchey was out of bounds to slag Canada's military. Canadians might get high or low about Olympic results, but they don't put political meaning on it. Before these Games, Alex Ovechkin's popularity was neck-and-neck with Sidney Crosby's. It's doubtful Americans think winning 28 medals will lead to the affordable health care or stable banking system that (cough) exists in Canada.
Memo to Pravda: The Cold War ended. Russia lost. Just like that hockey game.
Not sorry for going there. http://ca.sports.yahoo.com/olympics/...urn=oly,224254 |

No big deal. This isn't the first time people take a shit on Canada for failing themselves. Kinda gay though to bring up the soldiers, and ofcourse to mention we hide behind our "big brother".
Either way though, Canada > Russia in all levels of life Posted via RS Mobile |

Timothy is a shit disturber on hire from Pravda.
Here's another clip of something he wrote recently against Isreal. Quote:
Exactly when Israel’s international image hits rock-bottom and when the international community sees for itself the depths to which Tel Aviv will sink while claiming it is a State yet acting like a terrorist organization, a new militant group pops its head up in Gaza, kidnapping western journalists. In a flash, the 1-0 victory becomes 2-1 against in the hearts and minds of the western international community.
Curiously, exactly when Israel had proved once and for all beyond any doubt whatsoever that it is incapable of behaving like a State but rather like a terrorist organization, losing any little sympathy it had left in the international community (what after all is the difference between Hezbollah launching rockets against Israeli civilians and Israeli military forces blasting civilian homes and then claiming the civilians should not have been there?) an unheard-of militant group called Holy Jihad Brigades appears in Gaza and says it is behind the kidnapping of two western journalists on August 14th.
The Fox correspondent Steve Centanni and his cameraman Olaf Wiig were seized by masked raiders in Gaza City on August 14th. The Holy Jihad Brigades now demand that the Moslems held by America be released within 72 hours: “Release what you have and we will release what we have”, reads the fax.
If the Palestinian cause wanted anything which could so rapidly neutralise the propaganda victory in the aftermath of the Israeli massacres in the Lebanon (strafing funerals, slaughtering children in their homes, targeting power stations, committing acts of environmental terrorism, targeting civilian structures with military hardware) it is this.

Methinks he's a wee bit dramatic in his writing style.
this is taken from another site who did some digging on him. Quote:
I’ve done just a little digging, by the way, and was able to discover the following about Timothy Bancroft-Hinchey: He’s a permanent member of Pravda’s editorial staff although, as his name demonstrates, he’s not Russian. In fact, he’s a British songwriter with a degree from Leeds (which clearly makes him qualified to write on all matters political). Although the link for his bio is dead, nothing really dies in cyberpsace, and I was able to find that “USS Clueless” provides extensive quotations from Bancroft-Hinchey’s defunct biographical site:
| Another written gem from Timothy. Quote: I incidentally became involved with the world of music and even became one of the leading English song-writers of the 1980s. I took part in three Eurovision contests, released three albums, two maxi-singles and five singles. That was the time when I started establishing contacts with the press. “I had to give a lot of interviews for television and newspapers. I noticed that facts were reinterpreted on numerous occasions, almost always, in order to make an article correspond to ideas of a reporter. One fine day I realized that there was only one way to strive for the truth: to write a true story and to send it to mass media outlets. That’s what I did.”
I showed my first articles to a friend, a reporter, who expressed his interest in them and asked my why I did not take up journalism seriously. After that, I finished journalism courses, and worked as a freelance journalist at Portuguese, Spanish, Latin American, English and Romanian media outlets. However, journalism was not my only occupation. “I believe that there is nothing more boring for a journalist than to sit at table, working on the so-called news, which has already been picked out from the Internet by someone, retelling someone else’s stories. In addition to that, it is proof of the absence of professionalism, it is not worth it, in the long run. I like to visit new places, to collect new material for my own articles.” | Interesting..... Quote:
As USS Clueless points out, it’s very bizarre for someone in his own bio to include quotations around his own statements. I’m sure Bancroft-Hinchey is one of those who, when speaking, refers to himself in the third person. USS Clueless also provides links to some of B-H’s past articles, all of which display a startling animus towards America — which sort of makes for a matched set when paired with his animus towards Israel. (If you type B-H’s name in Google, you’ll get a million more articles hostile to America and Israel.)
I’m sure a little more digging would reveal plenty more dirt about this man. It’s sufficient, though, that he has Pravda (which is still Russia’s leading newspaper) as his forum for spouting off his vile political opinions to a nation that is still one of the major weapons dealers in the world.
UPDATE: Although I suspect B-H’s savage antipathy towards Israel arises because he is a Brit educated at a Leftist University (as they all are in England), one can’t help but believe that part of his hostility is because he accepts at face value the propaganda that poured out of Lebanon. Even though it’s too late to remedy the damage — damage that resulted in a ridiculous ceasefire — two websites have done yeoman’s work at exposing the falsehoods the press swallowed hook, line and sinker (or that the press created), and that the world media willingly promulgated. The first is the EU Referendum, which has dragged apart and exposed the rot in the supposed Qana massacre (which will join the supposed Jenin massacre as one of the great anti-Israel frauds); and the second is Zombie’s deconstruction of the totally false “Red Cross Ambulance Incident.” As Michelle Malkin rightly says (and it was from her site that I got these links) these two posts deserve whatever the Internet equivalent is for the Pulitzer — only something more worthy, since the Pulitzer has become too debased to remain as a standard for quality reporting.

I'm not a huge hockey fan, but I'm caught up enough in the olympics to learn a few new things I never knew before.
the way we talk about hockey in the media and amongst ourselves I was under the impression that we were the ultimate hockey super power, exactly like the USA dominates basketball, with an iron fist and nobody really comes close in terms of skill, and if they do beat is, it's a huge upset..
but then I saw some interesting stats and immediately I was WTFcking ?! the last time we beat the Russians was 50 years ago, our record currently against them stands at 2 wins and 9 losses ?!!?
I did NOT know we were getting owned by the Russians 9 to 1 prior to the slaughter that took place earlier in the week, really surprising.

No big deal. Canada has their own margin of ultra-nationalistic fans too that has looked for every excuse to bash other nations as well:
* making fun of Russia's brand of hockey
* China and its totalitarianist gov't and human rights policies
* USA and their republican following, pro-firearm and obesity
Lets not act like we don't do it to. Just take it as a shot for shots we've fired in the past; lest we look like Dan Boyle who likes to give shots but loses his head when one comes his way.
