AMG is now turbocharged

http://blogs.insideline.com/straight...orsepower.html

AMG vehicles equipped with the new engine will still be referred to as "63s" though because Mercedes likes the sound of it.

According to Mercedes, the S63 AMG will go from 0 to 60mph in 4.5 seconds in standard tune and a tenth quicker with the Performance Pack. The M157, as it's known internally, weighs slightly more than its predecessor (450 lbs. vs. 438), but fuel efficiency is way up. Mercedes says the S63 AMG will get up to 23.5 mpg on the highway, a 25% improvement. A stop/start feature is one reason for the increased efficiency.

^But the whole point of a 63 version is for the high revving n/a goodness. There's not really much of a point in a 63 if both 63 & 65 r FI

the overall fuel economy of the fleet of car a company sells in US also make this a sensible decision.

the only cars under the limit are like base C and B classes, E class bluetec and S class hybrid....so by lowering their 63 series fuel economy they can continue to sell big power saloons in the US.

Those S600 SOHC V12 have always been Twin-turbo charged since the mid 90s.

CSM Worldwide estimates downsized direct-injection turbo technology improves mileage by about 11 per cent and costs about $1,000 more. The question is whether consumers will pay the extra money when gas prices remain low. CSM figures at $3 gas, it would take more than five years to break even on the technology.

In truth, we are still paying for all these improvements. I would still pick up a N/A C63 once the used car price drops

true. i forgot about the 600 models.

the 73 AMG was also another engine AMG developed in late 90s and used it on SL model (R129).

PRE 03 are NA 6.0L. 99ish to 03 have cylinder deactivation which gives higher mpg, but tend to break as time goes by. (360ish hp)

03 and up (with facelift) is 5.5L twin turbo, no cylinder deactivation, but stronger more reliable that previous engine.... (495hp, but people dyno it to have a general higher number... people argue since 03 have 55 AMG which makes 495hp, the 600 that's not supposed to be "sport" cannot have a higher power rating than the AMG)

Yeah we might see a few 800hp cars

but for the most part..
these german manufacturers are going to turbos for efficiency
i don't how efficient (or necessary) an 800hp car would be

Driving a Merc is like playing a video game - very little feedback but everything seems to be so heroic when you do it. Complete with the comfort of your la-Z-boy at home.
